There was a thread a while back with a reference to a Guyatone steel as a "poor man's stringmaser." A few days ago I plugged in a friend's wooden-bodied Magnatone and was just knocked out by the sound--it seemed perfect for 50's C&W. Are there other vintage models out there that a newbie should be aware of? Right now if I came across a Magnatone 8 at the right price, I'd be all over it in a heartbeat and I'd really like to know what else might be out there

Tradewinds is another. I had an S8 at one point. It definitely had the sound. It was very weak on cosmetics, though. I've heard, however that they have come a very long way since that time.

Edward. isn't that a contemporary guitar with a price tag higher than a Guyatone or Magnatone?
I'm definitely interested in the newer clones in the long run, but at this stage I'm more interested in affordability. I have a Dynalap, a nice little 8-string, but it doesn't have that authentic sound, at least not to my ear.

Gibsons,Nationals, Supros, and Rickenbackers come to mind as alternatives to Stringmasters. Plus earlier Fenders like the Dual Pro...Jerry

I think these are the most underestimated steels out there. Winking

I don't know what the current prices on Tradewinds are. I know that mine was around $600.00 for a S8 with stand.

Here is a photo of an Oahu in great condition.

Click on the link in my sig. Don't worry, you don't have to join anything to view the photo on the home page. Smile

It is owned by a middle-aged woman who just took up the study of lap steel a few weeks ago.
