|
|
After decades of playing steel guitar, I've arrived at a point wherein I'm very choosey about what strings I adorn my musical instruments with.
I have a box of brand new GIBSON Standard Guitar strings in broken sets for my olde Rickenbacher Bake-lite steel guitars. Cost me $127.00 and had to wait nearly six months for them to get here from Texas. The tho't of installing them on more than a dozen Ricks has overwhelmed me completely.
For my Bigsby and Emmons I use nothing but the best....I use a special brass wrapped with chrome and an underpinning of magnesium, flatwound...... that is virtually unbreakable. They ain't cheap and I have to wait nearly 3 year to get them by special order from Czechoslovakia where this alloy was initially used for tank and aircraft cables. Circa 1920's. Don't knock 'em if you haven't tried 'em! |

B for me.
All sorts of brands, whatever I can get at the time. Ernie Ball, SIT, D'Addario, Fender etc. The Carter is pretty good on strings, doesn't seem to break 'em at all, or perhaps I've just been a bit ahead of the game.
Had to push a bit for my local shop to get 0.022" plain strings, but now they get them in for me in packets of 10. Still trying to get packets of 10 Ernie Ball 0.011" reinforced strings locally for my 3rd on the E9th, but eventually they'll come. Amazing just how many individual packets of spare strings you end up with in your gear bag.
I've never bought a full E9th or C6th steel-guitar string-set yet. Just individually. _________________ The steel guitar is a hard mistress. She will obsess you, bemuse and bewitch you. I used to change string brands like underwear up until I got my first new Carter. At that time Fabian recommended the Ernie Ball strings like the ones they put on at the factory. I have used them ever since. I use them on my newer Carter also.
Before, I changed strings about the time the 3rd string broke for the 2nd time. Now I change them just whenever I get around to it. I have never, ever popped a 3rd string on either Carter. _________________ John Drury

A & B. I get the Ricky Davis Jagwires from b0b. I like the tone of nickel and the heavier gauges on the E9 set. Jagwires have the more flexible feel of European strings.. anyway, these strings work/balance and break less, and SOUND better on my Pro ll than anything I've tried. |

After 40 years of putting strings on pedal steels and using every manufactures strings, I put a set of Jagwire nickel on the Mullen in November. I haven't broken a string and it has been played about 12 to 18 hours each week. Yes they are getting a little dead so I am ready to put on a new set and they will be Jagwire. ah _________________ Mullen (Black) Pre G-2 9x7, B.L. 705 PUP's, Evans SE 200 Telonics NEO 15-4, BJS Bar, Peterson Strobo Flip, Steelers Choice Seat, Folgers Coffee and Hilton Pedals.
