Just curious..........
Lots of loyal steel guitar player/fans, attend one or more steel guitar shows annually. There's the BIG HAWAIIAN SHOW in Joliet, IL;, Scotty's BIG STEEL GUITAR SHOW in St.Louis, MO.; the Texas Steel Guitar Assn. show in Dallas, TX, and the one that pops up in Hawaii every so often, etc.
How many miles would YOU have to travel to attend any of these shows? How many days do YOU have to commit to making such a trek? How much total cost do YOU feel YOU normally incur.....meals, lodging, travel expenses by car or airline?
Soooooooooo, WHY do YOU do it? Just wealthy and have lots of time? YOU want 15 minutes of glory up on the BIG Stage? Hoping to land a slot on the Grand Ole Opry? Is a record contract in the back of YOUR mind? Or is it the opportunity to meet and mingle with a group of really wonderful people with similar likes from all over the world? |

Ray,I go to the Phoenix show every year,How far away is it?By the time I get off of the plane I'm pretty numb from the waist down. The flight costs me about twenty bucks I use my Alaska Airlines frequent flyer miles,The Hotel comes out to about $275.00.that includes a free breakfast buffet...I get to see all of my steel guitar friends.I also get to back up people on guitar,I don't need any glory or a record deal...It's a good dose of the real world for me for a few days, and some real food which doesn't happen up here, and I love the old road stories, jokes, lies etc. That stuff is priceless,And I make new friends every year. This year I got to play guitar behind Dan Tyack,Chuck Lettes, and Chuck Back...Like Christmas, and my birthday rolled into one. There aint no snow in Phoenix.

Ray the dallas trip this year will set me back about $8000.Bringing the other half and my daughter, that includes picking up her custom built White Rains steel that will be on display in the Rains booth. Im not looking for fame or fourtune im just another face in the crowd.I am going to soak up that wonderful hospitality that your fellow country men gave me last year as i think the USA is a wonderful place to visit , and to be around all that talent in the way of steel muscic i dont think that can be beaten.Regards to you all hope to see and chat to you all at the show.Keith White uk. _________________ Sho-Bud 'LDG', Sho-Bud 'The Professional', Rains SD10, Fessenden D10, Hilton Pedal, Peavey Session 500, Peavey 112, Lots of PV PA, And of course, the BJS Bar (for the best tone)! The Dallas show isn't that far for me so it doesn't cost me much. I mainly go to see old friends and to check out the new gadgets. |

If I want to jam with anybody who plays anything but bluegrass, I need to go to a get together of some sort. I haven't been to a steel guitar show. But I do travel a bit to music festivals and Jam sessions. It's just to get to play my favorite kind of music with like-minded folks. It cost a couple of thou a year. And it uses up all my vacation time. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

Personally I would like to go and mingle with the people and watch and learn from the pros. But if somebody wants me up on stage, I'll gladly oblige. I won't be able to go to the Dallas show, one of the big reasons is money, and having a place to stay. If my sister and I were on speaking terms, I would stay with her in Fort Worth and go on to the show. But we have not talked since 2007 when my house caught fire.
I've done everything I could to try to right the situation. |

I've flown to Dallas a couple of times, and St Louis about 15 times over the last 25 years. Every one of those trips cost me at least $1,000, usually a lot more.
This year I'm financially strapped and plan on staying home. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.
