Just swung a deal on a Silver Face Master Volume Vibrosonic, with an orange JBL.
Does a pull/boost on the master volume knob mean it's the 135 watt ultralinear version?
The speaker needs a recone. Is there a light, modern replacement that anybody loves in this amp?

The silver-faces were "Vibrosonic," with an O. They usually say "135 watts rms" at the speaker jack.
If I had one, I'd try a Weber neo speaker. Supposedly they nail the JBL sound. |

Congrats on your find, Ken. I do believe the push-pull knob does deem it an ultralinear. So you will need something fairly powerful in there. I'd say the amp fried that JBL. If it were me, I'd throw a Black Widow in there and be done with it. Or maybe an Eminence Commonwealth from a Steel King. They come up here for sale all the time. No worries about blowing either one of those.
I tried a Neo with my Twin and it sounded sterile - too much high-mids. I also tried a Weber California Alnico and it broke up pretty early. For steel, get something with a lot of wattage.
**just saw your "light" requirement......never mind. |

Yes, it is indeed a VibrOsonic. Having read the back panel, it says "100 Watts." Doh.
While I have heard about blowing those JBL's with 100 watts, having seen this one out of the box, I would guess the offending instrument may have come from Justin or Tony Lama, not Fender.
Oh,it now has a Black Widow sitting in it, and it sounds pretty darned good. I happened to have a spare sitting in the basement. It's a 1502-4, but sounds close enough for the time being. It'll get a cap job in the near future when my indiscretionary fund account allows.
Thanks for the help!!

Hey Ken, Recone that JBL and slap it back in there, it's the real deal everyone else trys to copy. It will work just fine in your amp, unless you want to keep it dimed out and play distortion, then you will just blow it again. But you couldn't find a better sounding steel speaker than that. My Vibrosonic is the 135 watt ultralinear which came with an orange frame JBL. Works perfect.
By the way, a Vibrosonic uses an 8 ohm speaker. So make sure your recone man knows you want 8 ohms. |

The JBL is off to the recone store in the morning. I have no intention of blowing big distorted wind through the thing. Any risk of cooking it with the bass end of a C6 neck at moderate stage volume?

Yup, just like that. Understated speaker color, what?

I found that the Orange frame JBL-D130f coudn't handle the octave below effect I like to use sometimes, and have replaced it with an EVM-15L, which takes it all and begs for more.
I also felt that that speaker was too ice-pick treble-ee for Pedal Steel.
ymmv.
I would reccomend they replace the aluminum dust cover with a paper one at the time of re-cone, to tame the shrill. |

Ken,If it looks like mine then it's a 135 watt amp.The JBL is bright...I use it as my guitar rig also.I use a tone control on both my steel guitar, and 6 string and that works fine for me.Enjoy your amp.Stu _________________ Steeltronics Z-pickup,Desert Rose S-10 4+5,Desert Rose Keyless S-10 3+5... Pete, your problem is that you have way too much high frequency hearing. You need to play with more really loud bands with no hearing protection, and then that JBL will sound just great. |

Hey Ken - I also tried the Weber Neo in my Twin, but I'm going back to my D130-F. I've tried a lot of 15's and the Weber is close, but the JBL is the best I've found for my rig. As they say YMMV.
BTW who do you play with - when and where? I play down at Jack Quinns in the Springs every so often. |

I had a Emminence Kappalite in mine. Shaved a ton of weight and sounded GREAT. You can score one from Tom Bradshaw.... |
