This is probably the best comparison between a lower end resonator guitar (Regal) and high end resonator guitar (Scheerhorn) that I've encountered so far. You DO get what you pay for. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

I do like the sound of the Scheerhorn better, but I image the Regal might actually cut better in a band!
I recently traded for a Beard Goldtone Mahogany and I was able to A/B it with a USA solid wood Beard and the Goldtone captured about 95% of the same tone (I would mark that Regal clip at about 60%.)
The moral of the story is with a Beard setup, that Regal might be closer to the 90% mark and not down at 60%! _________________ Primitive Utility Steel |

$6000-8000 vs $100-500.....
I somewhat disagree.
I would never own one(made in china)but I think if you take two Dobros and give them the same strings, cone, nut, spider, inserts and set up, you will see a much more subtle difference.
I just went up to elderly and played 12-15 dobros from $1000 to $3700. I took my OMI with me and it came in 3rd place sound wise, to me and my friend who is also a steel guitarist. Mine is a total different animal compared to how it sounded when it was original however.
I agree you do get what you pay for in most cases but a good set up with quality components will take a lot of dobros pretty far.
FWIW
This was the winner for sound of all the dobros at elderly's that day...set up by Mr. Horn

This one came in second, plywood.....

I did not play a Horn that day and I am sure the difference might better, but not by that much, not $4000 worth???
Forget all that.....
Just buy American....you wont regret it!!

I did the same set up as my OMI to a friends Regal. Ended up with the exact same sound except the Regal sounded how what I would describe as, less reverb and volume.
Regals have a softer glue (hot melt?) that I think tends to suck some tone away. |

It do like the video. It is a great comparison of a dobro's potential. I like how that guy worked both guitars in the same song. It sure makes for an easy contrast. |
