I haven't posted a general list here in quite a while, and many new or occasional forumites might not know of the courses I offer.

For those who don't know me, I've enjoyed... and still enjoy... a successful playing career as a full-time musician. My bio is viewable on my website, and my instruction and course material is an outgrowth of that part of my professional life.

As to my teaching philosophy, I stress melodic playing in my instruction, in what I'd *presumptuously* Wink call the "Jimmy Day" style of playing. My late friend Jimmy was the master of expressive melody work, in which the lyrics of the song could almost be heard. This is the style I attempt to emulate in my own playing, and what has worked for my teaching career, both in private lessons and in my course material.

Learning licks and turnarounds is great and necessary, but IMHO these are incomplete musical ideas. What we should strive for in our playing is communication, or expressing the story of the song without the benefit of lyrics. To do so best is to emulate the melody of the song as closely as we can. Once we do that, or have the ability to do that, we are able to make our own statements as commentary to what the singer of the song is saying with words.

So my philosophy is: learn the melodic scale positions, pay attention to the melody of the song, and "get into" what the story of the song is.

I'd also like to add this big "thank you!" Jeff Newman was the man who guided me into this endeavor, and for that I'm eternally grateful for his assistance in promoting my courses, and his constructive criticism and input. God Bless Jeff!

As to the products themselves, they're each individaul packages that consists of a soft-bound book and CD. All the courses include a CD with solos played to a rhythm track, followed by the track I used so that you can play the solos yourself just as I played them. The book contains the tab of all the solos exactly as I performed them, printed clearly and understandably.

My course list includes these titles:

for E9 tuning

12 Gospel Favorites
Shuffles, Ballads, and Waltzes Vol. 1
Shuffles, Ballads, and Waltzes Vol. 2
Swinging on E9 Vol. 1
Swinging on E9 Vol. 2
Essential Bandstand Solos
E9 By Request Vol. 1
E9 By Request Vol. 2

for C6 tuning

C6 Texas Style ***NEW COURSE!***
Texas Dance Time, all the solos on my album of the same name.
Rancho Rhythm Roundup, likewise, based on that album.

for Dobro (resonator guitar) in G tuning

Country Songs for Dobro

I also have available, for your dining and dancing pleasure , all 3 CDs I've recorded, all for C6 tuning and predominantly western swing.

Texas Bandstand Favorites
Texas Dance Time
Rancho Rhythm Roundup

Also available are all of my rhythm tracks packages, which include a CD and book of charts. These are not tabbed out solos, but rather rhythm tracks without lead instruments so that a player can practice solos, backup, etc. They're appropriate not only for steel guitar, but ANY lead instrument... guitar, fiddle, lapsteel, dobro, vocal, what-have-you. Also they're excellent for learning to read chord charts and how to follow them.

Classic Country Vol. 1
MORE Classic Country Vol. 2 ***NEW TRACKS***
Strictly Country Vol. 1
Swinging Standards
Western Swing Classics
Hank Williams
California Country
Ernest Tubb Classics

Complete descriptions and prices for all my material can be found on my website. Click on the "Products for Sale" tab on the left and you'll see all you need to know.

I've helped lots of pickers improve their approach to steel guitar and how to think about playing melodically on the instrument, based on the many letters, emails, and comments I've received. Knowing this has been a source of great gratification for me, and I sincerely thank all of y'all for your support.

Thanks for the bumps, guys! Smile

I'm home for one day on Dec.9, and I'll try to get the orders out that day. But I'm still on a "road" schedule, so if I can't get the stuff bagged up and to the post office that day, your orders will have to wait until Dec.24 at the earliest. So PLEASE be patient, y'all.

Thanks, Bro. Joe!

and also a big thanks to the attendees at the SWSGA Steel Guitar Show in Phoenix this past weekend, who made the trip a big success for me.

It speaks well for a show when a vendor's sales equal or exceed those made at larger events. Thanks again, sincerely.

My turn to bump.

Friendly, congenial service and very reasonable prices from a guy who is the real deal.

Good, playable arrangements of the tunes you wish you knew. And when you play them, you won't find yourself going "Hmmm, that's not exactly the chord I would have used there."

Got the big bundle, Herb. Thanks.
