Pick-up upgrade?

Can someone briefly describe the subtleties(virtues) between pickups to a greenhorn? i.e. Bill Lawerence vs. George L's vs. Truetones?

Jason...I believe there are sound bites of the major brands of pickups on the Carter site. They are placed there I assume so that prospective Carter buyers can decide which pickup suits them best. They are of course, installed in Carter guitars, but it should give you a fairly good comparison of the various tonal aspects.
