One of the greats. Jonie is also right there. Two fine people here, as well as, musician/singer. I don't think I've a nicer couple in the steel circles. |

Yes Mike Johnson did the steel part on a CD for a band I am looking to play with more on a permanate basis.
His delivery on these songs he did for Jeff Smithart is some of the best I have ever heard on kick off intros and fill.
This man is a true artist with the steel guitar.
I have been working on learning the songs note by note for a week now and I feel it will be another week or so.
Splended one of a kind self made kick offs that make these songs unique. |

As great as this is, it appears to have been at the ISGC. If so, this is an outlaw as Scotty prohibits video at his show. You may want to contact him for approval to post! |

I never knew this.Does Scotty pay the royalties for this event or how does this work?
Does he have the stand-alone right for this? Please enlighten me on this please Roger.
I know of many people that go to all these events and this is the first time I hear of this.I was always under the assumption that us steel guitar players were in it for the instrument and not just the gain. |

Man Mike has got to be one of the best players around, not to mention he is from Alabama. He plays with such feeling and emotion, you can tell he loves what he does.
As to the video's. For as long as i have been goin to the St. louis convention, scotty has always prohibited video taping. and they announce it all weekend long. not because he just doesnt want us to but some players have requested it, and the fact of somebody blackmarketing their video's and makin money off of the players because of who they are like buddy, hal, doug, paul jr. And doin it without the players permission. And if they catch you with a video camera they will take it, they did it to a guy sitting near us a couple years ago. _________________ JDAWG

There is a big sign outside the hall saying "Absolutely No Video Cameras Allowed". This has been the rule as long as I can remember - and it is enforced. I was videotaping Roy Ayres' SGHOF induction ceremony two years ago, but only after Scotty has given his permission to do so.

Ok, here ya go.
I have already been in contact with Scotty concerning these video's.
It is a direct violation of the terms of the ISGC for anyone to video tape any portion of the main ballroom shows.
Since I have been responsible for the operation of the sound/video booth for many years, Scotty has asked that I try to police this matter.
Therefore I am filing a complaint with YouTube for violation of use.
Also, once it is determined who this "steelgtr" is, he/she will be banned from the convention.
You cannot miss the signs inside and outside of the convention hall stating "No Video Allowed".
With all the new technology, camera's are down to the size of credit cards, so we WILL be more diligent in watching for these camera's.
Scotty has even considered "a purse check" at the front door, but logistically that would be almost impossible, so we, the staff, will pay close attention.
Some venue's do not even allow digital camera's inside, and this is the reason. The camera's can do video also.
If anyone knows who this person is and would like to let me know, please send me an email or PM.
Let's not let one person wreck it for us all.
Thanks,
Bill Ferguson
Here is content from communication with Scotty:
"What kind of a problem are we now facing?
1 – A small camera can now record up to 6 hours or so.
2 – Deny cell phones in the hall as it can also record up to 6 hours.
3 – Check all bags and purses as they enter the hall.
Several large venues such as the Fox Theatre here in St. Louis do make these searches as well as posting many signs to that effect of no taping and even say that the person caught will be denied entry if they don’t surrender the camera or possible evicted without their money being returned.
If we ever find out who it was he must be denied to entry to any future Conventions.
Thanks for letting me know and good luck on locating the guy. We did have another such problem. A guy posted a video of Buddy Emmons on Youtube taken at the Convention awhile back. He has never been identified.
Scotty"
And a copy of message I sent to " steelgtr"
"As engineer in charge of the sound/video at the International Steel Guitar Convention, I have the written authority to act on behalf of DeWitt (Scotty) Scott to advise you that you are in direct violation of the ISGC by video taping any part of the ISGC within the main ballroom.
In addition, I am in the process of contacting each player that you have video taped. The players have not given there permission to video or post these illegal video's.
In addition, I am filing a complaint with YouTube concerning this matter.
Please respect the privacy of the players and the rules of the ISGC and destroy any video you have made and remove your video from YouTube or other electronic viewing site.
Once we have determined your true identity, you will be banned from the ISGC.
Sincerely,
Bill Ferguson |

That worked. They are all gone from YouTube now. I support Scotty's stance and Bill's enforcement. I love watching these as much as anyone, when they are legal and above board. _________________ Steeless. |

Wow, saved me a lot of headaches having to file a claim with YouTube.
While I support having as much steel guitar info on the web as possible, I do not support bootlegging.
Stay tuned to YouTube for more legal videos from the convention..

YouTube violations ( as well as other sites) are directly related to copyright violations, not only artist performance. Songs/song titles are the problem, not just the artists. We can have all the permission in the world to post a video of an artist but if we do not have licensing to "distribute " the song, the writer/publisher can still have it pulled, and in many cases do. He who owns the music wins in the end. Copyright violations are not about the artist, they are about the song, in many cases they can be one and the same but the song is the what fuels the engine.
Having a blanket license to play multiple catalog songs at a public venue is not a license to distribute, it is a live performance license. Distribution is a whole other matter. CD, tape, Video, giving away etc, are all distribution and not part of the license to perform live. Kinda like a bar, legit bars pay a set fee/month to play music and for the live bands.

Seems that BMI/ASCAP could really enhance their revenues by collecting fees for every tune played on YouTube. I would think, if they have claim to it, that they would be on it like white on rice. Interesting situation. I used to mix and transmit church services to a local radio station for retransmission on AM each Sunday. We didn't worry about BMI/ASCAP, but I understand the AM station had it covered. I wonder if YouTubes has and agreements in place? _________________ Steeless. |

well this may tick some off but its just my point of view is all. I would agree about all of this if the people was making a profit on what they posted. but nobody has no gain here. _________________ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvuH7H8BajODaL_wy3_HSJQ |

Joseph, I agree with you.
The only thing is, as I see it stated on YouTube. You must have the authority to make the video and the approval to show it.
They have a lot of legal jargon that explains this.
In the early days of YouTube I had some videos pulled by Gaylord Entertainment, even though they did not own the video. I made reference to Ernest Tubb, so I was flagged for that.

Yes they do.
It's not all bad. There have to be some restrictions in place.
If not, then all there would be in bootlegging.
I don't agree with that.
Take care,

I just starting using you tube not to long ago. I use it for short clips of a intro to songs then try to show how its played. its a different direction for me to learn as well. and it has helped me out alot. and the videos that other post are great as well. I am amazed at the 12 year old boy that can do Ill come running. that makes me want to put my guitar away lol. but you know I did that once years ago and at this point in my life I dont let little things like that stand in the way of learning. some people are just better at learning then others is all. _________________ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvuH7H8BajODaL_wy3_HSJQ |

When I did the video of Buddy at Benton, I first ask Buddy if I could video his set. He said it was OK with him if it was Ok with the host. So I ask Don Lampley and Bobby Reed, Who Ok'd it. Then Bill Ferguson with permisson from Buddy was allowed to post it on U tube for us all to enjoy. There's only one way to do something and thats the right way.
I would like to put this Video on DVD and sell them but would never do it with out Buddy's permission and without paying him Royalities. _________________ Custom Rittenberry SD10

Bill, not sure what you mean by this question. My comments above to this thread are only to reflect current copyright laws and guidelines and how they may relate to YouTube and/or other sites dropping video's or music clips from public viewing or listening. The Steel guitar video community is very small in the scheme of the larger community.
Now that being said, the rules at Scotty's are clear and they should be respected.

The royalities are for the songwriters/publishers , not the artists. Artists record CD's, pay royalties to use the songs, and make there money on the sale of the total product. If the artist and the writer are one and the same then that's a good thing. IF you sell a Buddy DVD you need to do both, pay the song copyright royalities and pay Buddy !
Guys, copyrights and royalty issues are easy to find and learn about. Paying royalties for song use is one thing and getting permission from an artist to post his/her performance is yet another. One is a violation of law the other is a violation of common respect and courtesy. Both are important.
For Q+A regarding copyrights visit the Library of Congress or even the Harry Fox Agency FAQ page.

So let me ask Bill, what are you saying here ?
The Convention will now check personal bags and purses as well as refuse cell phones into the main hall, is that what I am reading ? Is that where the Convention is headed ?
1500 to 2000 people , that's a lot of Cell Phones to claim check at the door
Actually with regard to Cell Phones I doubt there is one that can record / store 6 hours of video, that would require about 15 gig or more of memory !
My Cell Phone can barely store the last dropped call let alone an entire video performance.
