I was blessed to be able to attend a concert with these two monster pickers at the Museum of Making Music in San Diego last night. It was just the two of them with no rhythm section in an intimate setting in a back room of the museum with a sit-down audience of around a hundred people. I was able to join Cindy,Redd and author/musician Andy Volk for dinner before the show and beverages later. It was a quality hang of the highest order.

For what it's worth Redd just won a Grammy about 5 minutes ago, for his part in "Clusterpluck" with Brad Paisley and James Burton, Vince Gill, John Jorgensen, Steve Wariner and Albert Lee...

Which unfortunately means Lloyd Green and Jerry Douglas didn't win, but a nice nod to a bunch of great Tele players. John Jorgensen accepted and mainly thanked Leo Fender for inventing the Telecaster which was kind of cool...

I know Mr. Volkaerdt reads the forum sometimes, so:

Way to go, Redd...! Can you display it at the Continental Club so we can all see it?
Cool

Michael,

To catch Cindy live is right at the very top of my "to do" list. She is my favorite non pedal, six/eight string and Dobro player.

She doesn't very often come to "Twang Town", so I guess I'll have to make the trek to Austin one of these days.

What can I say about Redd? The guy is a freak of nature! The laws of physics, music, gravity, etc. do not seem to apply to the cat! He makes me want to chunk my Tele into a chip mill!

I used to germ the hell out of him when he lived in Nashville. What an interesting guy! I figured he would tire of talking guitars at some point but he never blew me off, very cool guy. Truly the Master of the Telecaster!

Yeah, I can't remember the last time Cindy came to Nashville and played steel; too bad! She usually comes to the "Reso-summit" that Rob Ickes hosts here every year and gives a dobro clinic and concert...

I wish she and Redd would come here together but playing this town is such a crapshoot for non-superstar touring acts; you might have a full house or might be lucky to get gas-money. Kind of the downside to having such a glut of great music here...

Michael, do you know if they have any other gigs while they're in town??? I'd LOVE to see it. By the way, I did a gig with you maybe over a year ago now. It was an "interesting" gig for some church related thing. I was on bass. We had a lot of down time and I talked your ear off about steel. I'm still going at it. Taking lessons from John McClung. Thanks for all the info you gave me that day. I appreciate it.

No it was strictly a fly in,do the gig,fly out deal.
Cindy did say she was gonna be doing a string of California gigs with Dave Alvin but I can't remember when. I think it may be in a couple of months. There's probably a way to check that out on either Cindy's or Dave's websites.

Yeah, it was a great show! It was equally great seeing/meeting other Forum members and steel enthusiasts. I'm really excited about Cindy's new Texas Sheiks project, being the "Jug Bander" that I am. Quick pic from last Saturday:

I've got to tell you playing with Redd is a great experience. I got to play with him a year or two ago when he came up for his mother's birthday, and twice this past Christmas. It was a real treat. I told him the same thing he told John Hughey the first time he rcorded with him. "Go easy on me"

C.C. - Steel, Redd - Tele, Nate Rowe - Bass, Chris Gilson - Drums.

These four are on a DVD called Teletwang that Redd put together. It is an instructional collection of licks for Tele nuts, nicely done, two cameras, one on each hand, on one track.

The other track is over an hour of the finest music I have ever heard. Live at the Continental Club in Austin, If you are a Cindy, or Redd fan, get this DVD, awesome playing by all four people! (Redds site, or Amazon)

Cindy appears to be having a great time playing on the same stage with Redd! Redd Volkaert in my opinion is the #1 Tele picker on the planet.

Thanks for all the smoke everyone!
We had a blast playing at the museum, everyone there was to gracious and the exibit was incredible!

Lots of examples of every kind of slide/steel/dobro
even a couple of those, one string chinese gourd type pedal steels, pre-pedals of course.
Lots of music samples of the various instruments and a great video by Andy Volk.

Michael Johnstone brought some really cool lap steels for Cindy to try out.
I could go on & on & on.

Thank you to all involved and the folks that came out to see the museum and us!
If your near Carlsbad Calif you would love the museum,

Thanks, Redd Volkaert

Redd, I am tipping my last brewski of the evening in the general direction of Austin, TX. You truly are "The Man"!

Hey Pete,

When does Rob do the Reso-Summit thing? I am all about a Clinic/Concert by Cindy!

I never knew about this, probably because I am such a recent victim of the "Dobro Bug Bite". I can't seem to get through a day now without floggin the hell out of one of these resos!

I guess being cooped up with these things for the last 4 months since the motorcycle wreck has had an upside.

It hurts too much to be stompin pedals, hefting amps, etc, so I pulled some of my canoe paddles in the collection out and have been giving them a workout, or vice /versa! LMAO!

My poor Carter is gathering dust!

Pete,

Scratch that last question, I googled Reso-Summit only to find out that Cindy will be there, tentatively, but it is SOLD OUT. That doesn't surprise me! Oh well, I almost got to see her! Of all the bad luck!

Back to plan B, I guess I'll keep an eye on her site and see when she is performing in Austin and bum a plane ride to Austin off of Mrs. Drury, she talks about Austin a lot anyway, one of her favorite stops when she was flying. Maybe I can con her into going down there one day.

Thanks for the "Heads Up" anyway,

John

Back at ya, Redd. You and Cindy are musically unbeatable at what you do - it was one great show and hang. Cindy, Redd, Mike Johnstone, Dana Duplan are all super people. Redd, the Lollar CC in that Australian Pine Tele is a beautiful combo (even if your pick is a tad on the thin side. Smile

Great museum, wonderful gig, laugh-filled meals plus I was introduced to Hank Thompson's "Squaws Along the Yukon" - my new politically incorrect favorite song! What more could you ask for?
