| Al, let me know how you get on with yours. I think this will be the perfect answer to my regular trips back to England to play with my old friends. It beats cramming recorders, microphones, and who knows what into my luggage, and then having to turn my friends' homes into a forest of wires... |

Alan-I didnt get one yet, but am going to check it out. I like to eliminate mics and wires, etc and one like this would be real easy and simple to use without any setup procedures, that is usual with a more complex machine.....al.

Ive been using the Tascam DR-1 for lots of recording and it works great for a single instrument or hook it up to the board and get the entire mix. Its got some great features and Ive found that with a 2 Gig SD card you can record at CD Quality for almost 4 hours.
Tascams new Digital recorders are easy to use and to burn a CD you simply need a Computer, USB Port and its basically plug and play to burn and copy your music.
Its got built in Limiters, and two inputs, I use a small Peavey PV 14 USB Mixing console with mine, I run mics right to the Mixer and alos use another mic for some room ambience and youve got a very affordable Digital recording that needs very little editing etc.
I am using this to archive board mixes and shows and again its really chaeo and simple to use. SD Card are cheap, a 4 GIG SD Card gives many hours of recording and storage, its battery operated or you can get the external power supply, The battery can be recharged by plugging in the USB port as well from your Computer.

We have had many threads regarding these little recorders, H2,H4, Edirol R-1, R-09 , MAudio, Boss, Tascam etc. They are all great units.
some history
When these "devices" first hit the market several years back the two primary lowest cost units were the Edirol R-1 and the Maudio Micro track , both in the approx. $350 price range. I did indeed purchase an Edirol R-1, it has served me well and still does. Now that these units are basically under $200 they are a no brainer for any musician or for anyone wanting to record music or transfer music from other formats.
Since the Edirol purchase I bought a Boss Micro BR / 4 track at GC one day , I got it I think for $189. If you can get past the display with crammed features and 4 button operation this unit serves multiple functions, 4 track recorder with full effects, input preamps that can be edited, preset patches which can be edited ,drum editor, mastering tools, USB transfer or SD card swap and it also is an MP3/Wave field recorder. Now it does have an on board mic but it is mono, so for field recording a stereo mic is required. I have not used this as a 4 track recorder but I have taken mix downs from other recorders and used this to add final mastering. I also use this to record every live gig now. For power it connects to my common stomp box power chain. How convenient is that ? I do use a small Sony stereo mic rather than the on board mic.
Regarding using the Micro BR for Guitar or Steel, it has a HI Z input as well as a stereo pair in, true that many of the input patches are not quite right for Steel, but you can edit and make them just what you need and save them in the user bank, just like any workstation. I have written a few patches for the electrics and the Steel, very clean , I modeled them from the Nashville 400 settings that I use.
The Edirol is sitting at my PC and I use it to record music off the internet , either from YouTube ,Rhapsody or any other streaming audio. Sometimes I record other Steel players clips that they post and also from Tilly's website. I also use it to transfer LP's or Reel to Reel /Cassette to MP3.
Any of these units are a must for anyone even slightly connected to music. What a value they are.

I received mine during the week but haven't had chance to use it yet. One thing I noticed is that at first it gives you the impression it's defective. You have to hold your finger on the Power button for several seconds for it to turn on.
Thanks Andy for your shortcut to the Zoom H2 on the Amazon site. I ordered one, and also noticed they have very good deals on memory cards. I can remember paying $120 for 256 MB cards at one time, and now they're down to $18 for 8 GB. |

Alan-I am looking at the Tascom Dp-04 . It looks simple for me to use, maybe. I still havne't decided yet.Your Tascom DR 07 and the Zoom H2 looks good too....al

Amazing. I ordered it online from Amazon on Sunday 15th, the following day was a holiday, and I received it on Tuesday 17th.  I wouldn't have thought it possible.
Now I have two units to play around with over the weekend.
