I've always wonder after a session player lays down the cuts for a major artist, how does the road steel player learn it?

Does he get to contact the session player and learn it that way or does he have to sit down with the CD and work it up his own way?

Some of the road guys play it pretty close to the cut so i was wondering!!
I also wonder if the road player can put his own licks to it live!

Kenny, the artists usually want it as close to the recording as possible for live shows. Sometimes you can alter it a little without going totally crazy. The way i learn it is simple. Sit down with the CD and see how Paul or whoever did it then go from there. I put my own licks in every now and then, but i dont get crazy with it because i know the people that go to the shows want to hear what they heard on the radio.

Sometimes the band hangs at the studio when they are making the record and that kinda helps too !

I have done some demo sessions for song writers and when the song was cut by an artist for their record the steel player kinda stuck with what I had already played. I felt honored Idea

So lets say you play for Patty Loeless and she cuts a new cd, you get the CD and learn the best way you can?

Take Paul Franklin's lead on AJ's "You Don't Even Know My name" that isn't easy to sit down with a CD and learn! At least for me!

Thanks Brett!
