I just received this very sad news from Bobbe Seymour:
Hello fellow players,
I open this newsletter to all you steel guitar lovers and music people in general with a heavy heart. One of our biggest, greatest heroes in the world of steel guitar is in great peril with a serious stroke. The prognosis doesn’t seem to be too good. Mr. Tom Brumley is in Texas hospitalized in very grave condition.
Tom gained great fame in the sixties by being a member of the Buck Owens Buckaroos band and recorded a song by the same name, “Buckaroo” with great guitarist Don Rich. Tom also became legendary by recording “Together Again” on a two pedal steel guitar that just happened to be in the studio when Buck decided he was going to record that song right now.
“Crying Time” was another great hit that Tom became famous for. Tom played brutally simple, but with incredible tone and execution. When Tom left Buck in February of ’69, he soon went to work with Ricky Nelson and recorded one of my favorites of all time, “Garden Party”. Tom left Ricky Nelson shortly before the tragic fire happened in the DC-3 over Texarkana, Texas.
Tom also bought the rights, parts, patterns and distribution for manufacturing the ZB steel guitar in the seventies. He did this for a very few years, then sold the company. He was fanatical about quality and tone of these guitars. Ones that were built under his direction were as fine as any of the ZBs built.
Tom has given a major part of a brilliant life to the world of steel guitar, but the nicest thing I can say about him would be the truth when I say, no matter how great he is as a steel guitarist, as a human being, he’s greater.
I have seen Tom laugh until he couldn’t stand up and I have seen him cry like a baby like the last night he worked with Buck Owens. It was a very emotional moment but Tom is a wonderful human being with an incredible soul. It’s still not too late for prayers. The loss of Tom Brumley would be a severe blow emotionally to the world of steel guitar.
With this statement about Tom, I’m going to conclude this newsletter today because nothing I could say could follow.
Your buddy,
Bobbe |

My thoughts and Prayers go out to Tom Brumley. He doesn't know it but he was one of my first "Teachers ". I don't know How many Hours I sat at My first steel, back in the seventies, learning how to play "One Night Stand" By Ricky Nelson, with The Steel being played by, of course, Tom Brumley.
God Bless Tom. JD _________________ Jory Simmons |

Tom Brumley is one of the most gracious and generous person one would ever want to meet.
I hope he will recover well.

Tremendously sad time. Not that it matters, but Tom actually had a heart attack about a week ago and not a stroke. If you knew Tom, it's pretty shocking because Tom has always been in terrific shape and nobody could have ever guessed something like this would happen anytime soon. He's worked hard the last few years putting together the show he finally dreamed about in San Antonio and the grand opening would have been right around the corner. Tom, I'm praying hard for you, Rolene and the rest of the Brumley family. Tom is far more than just a legend. There are plenty of those around. Tom is as good of human there is on the planet and I hope you all pray to keep him here awhile longer yet. He's one of the great ones! _________________ Sho Pro SD10 and Nashville 400 & 112 |
