I am a new player, I have a Carter Starter, the setup is: LKL raises the E's, LKR lowers Low E, RKL lowers high E. Is this a standard setup? Could I/should I be able to lower both E's with RKL and Raise E's with LKR? Can a Starter be setup to even do this? There are a couple of times I've had to lower both E's at the same time...it can get uncomfortable! Please let me know...

Thanks, Tommy

This is a standard Emmons setup and the most steel
players use it. I dont think you want to reverse it.
As you learn to play you will coordinate the rocking
of your left foot on the A and B pedals to the position of the knees.

Should't 1 knee lever lower both E's (4 & Cool at the same time? If yes, which one? Tommy

The LKL should raise the e's 4 and 8- 2 strings
The LKR should lower the e's 4 and 8- 2 strings

OK...I'm getting somewhere. My LKR lowers my Low E ( 8 ), RKL lowers high E (4). Shoud I make the LNR lower both E's? Can a Starter be changed? What should RKL do? Tommy

Go to this website. This is the way yours is supposed to be set up. The knees should be moving
2 strings on each one unless someone has changed it.
Click on tuning.

Tommy I must disagree with Paul ... the standard Emmons knee placement is NOT "used by most players" .... it tends to be standard on student type guitars like the Carter starter ...and can't be changed around I don't think! However a hell of a lot of players have the E lower on the Right knee (moving left usually) ... IMO this is a lot better place to have it for a whole raft of musical reasons (Paul Franklin has talked about this on the forum) ... For me personally having the LKR lowering the E's would be very restrictive for a lot of things that I play!

Should you progress to a Pro type guitar you will have the flexibility to change your Copedant around and find out what suits your playing style best.

That's my problem (one of many), my LKR lowers only the 8th E string. My RKL lowers the 4th E string. I checked...it doesn't appear that it can be changed on the Starter. I guess I'll just have to live with it until I can afford better. When I upgrade my guitar later this year, what do you recommend? Is it a personal preference thing? Cost is a consideration, new is out. I think I would like to have an good used LDG! Is that going in the wrong direction? Tommy

This is from Carter website...the LKL and LRK raise and lower the E's, i think yours was messed around with Shocked , you should be able to put it back the way it was from the factory. Smile

Tommy, the Carter Starter LKL raises strings 4 and 8 1/2 tone from E to F. The LKR lowers strings 4 and 8 1/2 tone from E to Eb. This is what yours should be doing unless someone has moved rods.
Can you email me some good clear photos of under carriage or show them on this thread?
Jerry

Thanks for all the help guys...Your opinions are very helpful...I am screwed up and didn't even know it. That shows how GOOD I am. Well, that proves that with enough practice you can play a little on a bad setup.

Jerry, I'll get the photos to you tomorrow AM. Something ain't right.
See, I told you I need an LDG.

Oh yeah, the new Elite seat is great!!!

Thanks, Tommy

Tommy, did you acquire the guitar from the Carter factory or from an individual? I don't see how Carter could have shipped a guitar setup like that, unless someone had ordered it that way.

Bob, I bought it that way...it's an Ebay baby! The setup was never mentioned in the item description. When I received it, I assumed it was a regular stock guitar.
