Reading Ed Packard's topic on chord inversions got me to do a little thinking on "pleasant-sounding" chords. How many times have you heard a song that had a chord which really stood out and really captured your attention? Some people can hear one of those chords and immediately identify it and even describe how it was played. I confess -- I can't do that. I have to try to work it out the best I can, and hope I come up with the right answer. I would like to have a collection of everyone's favorite "pleasant-sounding" chords, with a explanation how they are played. To me, it would be very helpful and interesting to hear some views on this subject. Who knows, we may wind up with a pretty darn good collection of very interesting and useful chords.

Bob,I like the sound of the chords made with strings 3,5,8 and 4,6,10.When I first started playing ,they were sometimes hard to hit for me,but I liked them so much that I practised them until they came easy.I also like the major chords on 4,5,6 when you roll into them with the pedals.I hope this is what you're asking.

Andy, you are right on. Yes those type chords are what I had in mind. I can see why you had to practice those wide string grips. They sure leave a lot of room for mistakes, but well worth the time to perfect.

IMo the wide chords are the nicest.Like 4,8,10 for example. Not many people play the really wide chords these days though. With enough bass in your amp they can really stand out though.

On E9, I'm loving all the chords that involve the 9th string lower, with and without the B pedal. Another reason I could never get rid of the pesky D string.

I'd have to say it's the D#m9b5, or maybe the Ebm11(b9b5), or maybe the F#m9(b6)no 7, or maybe the Gbm(b9b6b5), or maybe the Ab(b5b2)no 3, or the Bbm6/9, or the C#7sus4(b9). No, it's the plain ol' D#maj13sus4.

Of course, I can't believe I left out the C#dim5(no 3).

I like the sound of a Maj 7th chord, for the ending chord,[if it's not overdone'] It's a nice ending chord on a pretty slow song,I like to use it sometimes on a hot uptempo tune also like steel guitar rag,My window faces the South etc.Used to play with a real good guitar player and singer that ended almost EVERY tune he played with a MAJ 7TH,[DON'T DO THAT] gets old real fast.
