Hello Everyone,
My name is Ray Langley, and I live in Sacramento, CA. I am 65.5 years old. I am
a five-year cancer survivor (with no conventional medical treatment). I also have
chronic pain due to several vehicle accidents and osteoporosis and emphysema. I
thought my guitar playing days were over.
But, I developed a strong interest in learning to play the lap steel just a few months
ago. On November 15, 2008 I joined this group (lapsteel@yahoogroups.com). At
the same time, I also joined the Steel Guitar Forum. Since that date, I have posted
182 messages in that forum in the “Steel Without Pedals” section of that forum.
In my opinion, the Steel Without Pedals section of the Steel Guitar Forum is the
absolute best resource for lap steel players and students. I had kind of forgotten
about my membership in the lapsteel group since there were ZERO messages all
throughout November and December of 2008! Then, here in January there was a
flurry of new messages, mostly about the old moderator returning. This culminated
in the announcement today that the group owner, Gabe, was going to terminate this
group! As soon as I read that, I offered to take over the group, rather than have it
closed down completely.
In the meantime, within a few hours of his announcement, I started a new yahoogroup
called “LapSteelGuitar”. I am the owner/moderator of 25 yahoogroups, and I am a
member of 25 other yahoogroups. Over the years, I have discovered that one of the
very best ways for a beginner to learn new things was to start a group. One of the
second best ways was to join a group.
So, now we have two yahoogroups devoted to lap steel. Gabe just announced that I
am the owner/moderator of the “old” lapsteel group! And, I have also started the
new group. You can subscribe to the “new group” by sending an email to:
LapSteelGuitar-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
The new group starts fresh with no baggage!
Now, everyone has a choice. You can stay here at “lapsteel” or join the new group
“LapSteelGuitar”, or join both groups. I’ll keep both of them active to see how it
goes. Some prefer the Forum format and some prefer the yahoogroups format. At
least we also have a choice there too.
Let’s all be happy and make music! Music is keeping me alive…..
