I heard of guys putting a foam insert around the changer to prevent the broken ball end of the string from hurting the changer, as well as "falling" outside of the chager, It is tough at times to find the little ball end, can anyone enlighten this a bit....

Get off of that track, guys. Mad

Some changers have a way of catching the ball to keep it out of the mechanism. I think that the newer Sierras do this.

It's only a problem if you use old strings that are likely to break. A piece of foam is a workable, if ugly, solution.

I posted a couple pics of my solution. When the "ugly" little piece of foam is in place it is almost invisible in it's ugliness.

My new Zum Hybrid came with a strip of lightweight foam poked down in behind the changers to stop any broken string ends falling into the bowels !! They sit flush with the top of the neck so you can't actually see them unless you look directly from above.... a very simple but easy solution! just find a bit of very light foam and cut some strips that will fit neatly in across the back of the changer fingers and you will never have the problem again. Or use jagwires and never break another string anyway ha !!
