That whole album, "The Best of Friends," has become one of my all time favorites. John Lee is backed on his classics and newer songs by Clapton, Robert Cray, Santana, Charlie Musselwhite, Bonnie Raitt and other top players. Other than listening to John Lee alone, it doesn't get any better. |

David, I thought that was from the "Mr. Lucky" album??? Maybe it's on both? I also really liked "This is Hip" with Cooder. |

Yes, upon closer inspection, The Best of Friends is a compilation, and has "Waterfront" and "This is Hip" from Mr. Lucky. It appears the title has a double meaning in that it is "the best of" John Lee's recordings with various friends, plus three new tracks.

All of John Lee's albums are great, and he must have over a hundred. I have some really early house party recordings of him on acoustic. And some of his best are the early electric stuff from the '40s and early '50s. It all sounds consistently like John Lee, but he developed more variety in his later years. I think "Waterfront" would sound good with some pedal steel. |

Mr Lucky is one of my favourite blues albums ever, and Ry's slide tone on This Is Hip just slays me.If I remember right, that's Booker T. behind Van the Man & John Lee on Waterfront. I think you better haul out your Rotovibe & add that one to your set list, D. Dog...

Although I have many John Lee Hooker recordings (mainly the early VeeJay releases), I don't have his "Best of Friends" or "Mr. Lucky" albums. Is this version of I Cover The Water Front the jazz standard by Green/Heyman? If so, I don't think I've ever heard Hooker sing a jazz ballad. I'll bet it's just as cool as most of his efforts. BTW: My current favorite version of the Green/Heyman song is by Johnny Adams from his "Verdict" album on Rounder.
My three favorite John Lee albums (LPs) are: "Endless Boogie", "If You Miss 'im... I Got 'im" (featuring Earl Hooker), and "Simply The Truth" (with jazz musicians) all on ABC Bluesway. I think only "Endless Boogie" is still available on CD and iTunes.
Keep on pickin'!

OOOPS! I got so involved with reading this thread I forgot there was a link.
You're right, John. That version is "Hookerized".
Keep on pickin'!
