Could someone tell me if the EQ s on NV400s are the shelving type ??
I am thinking of trying an external EQ like a 10 band.
Are there any players out there who run an external EQ unit with thier amps.

I believe most all Peavey amps are parametric. (Shelving EQ is pretty useless for musical instruments.)
Graphic EQ's are the best way to get a sound out of your amp that it wasn't designed to deliver. They add a lot of flexibility and tonal lattitude to otherwise "lifeless" amps. |

I have used a 10 band EQ with my Nashville 400 amp but I think the best sound available from this amp is by is doing one of the preamp mods, like the Miracle Audio mod or the Peavey Tone Enhancement mod AND doing the Reverb mod (which adds lots of high-end artifacts - airy stuff). Then try various speakers until you find the right voicing for your particular guitar/pickup. I'm using a JBL D 130 and I'm very happy with my NV 400 although I've modded mine extensively, even beyond what I've mentioned here.

Yes, they are active (cut and boost). The shelving types are found on older Fender amps (Twins, etc). They are also found on the older Session 400 and even the guitar channel (2nd channel) of the Vegas 400 amp, Shelving are normally numbered 1-10. Acttive controls are flat at "0" and can typically boost +-15db.
The bass, treble, presence controls on the N-400 are active shelving. The mid control is a parmetric (frequency band-width)with a control to shift the band back and forth. |
