Great musicianship and mastery of the instruments. And the post comes from one of the musicians who did this! We really should consider ourselves lucky to have those guys with us!

Yes. Koefer played steel on that entire session. All I had to do was try to keep up with him on guitar.
No mean feat. (Come to think of it, it was a pretty mean feat.)

Fantastic Mr. Roy!!!
A couple of years ago I asked Smiley to put together some of Kofer's stuff for me since I had none and Smiley is an ardent Bobby Kofer fan. (And I understand has one of the largest country music collections in existence.) This is one of the tunes he sent me on CD. It would be nice to know a little more about it. Tell us more about the session.

Bill,
Koefer and I tried to talk the boss (Pee Wee King) into letting us do the session using twin steels, but he wouldn't give in for some reason. I think he had heard Bob White and Pee Wee Whitewing playing twin steels on Hank Thompson's records and didn't care for it. I could have done the harmony parts a lot easier and cleaner on steel, since lead guitar was strictly a second instrument for me. We recorded six of the songs on the album as instrumentals with Koefer and me "twinning." These were: Seven Come Eleven, Woodchopper's Ball, Tippin' In, Farewell Blues, Dragnet and Flying Home. The rest of the songs on the album were western swing vocals. Bobby Koefer wrote the arrangements on the six instrumentals. It was rreally a fun session to do. I don't think we had to do but one take on each song. The album was recorded at RCA studios on Navy Pier in Chicago, and was the last session I did with Pee Wee, where I spent 8 1/2 years of my music career.
I'll post some more samples from the "Swing West" album when I get time to convert them to MP3s.
