I just ordered that course from Al Brisco in Ont.I was a little worried that I might have made a mistake, but the Table of Contents pretty much has cast my worry to the wind.Looks like everything a fella needs to know is in there!
Ray, is the music in standard notation as well as tab?

I bought the Jerry Byrd course from a friend about six or seven years ago when I decided to take up steel guitar again and I found it to be immensely useful not least because of the labor of love that Jerry Byrd made it. I highly recommend it to my students.

When you go through it you will find that it is written by a man who had a deep musical knowledge and an intense passion for his beloved instrument. He has painstakingly given the patient reader all the techniques he knew of or originated himself and in the best way he could communicate in words. The book also has two cassettes with his vocal instruction.

The only criticisms I could have is that it was not until page 118 that he got to the C6th tuning (the B11th precedes it) and that it is aimed for the 6 string steel guitar, not 8 strings, which I found not to be a terrible hardship to overcome with a little bit of brain power.

There are doubtless, by now, other good instruction materials. But, in my opinion, a this is a really great introduction (and more) to steel guitar. And as Jerry would say, "this is just a beginning, keep picking and develop your own style". Hats off, Jerry Byrd.

Ray Montee, I know that you know all about this course because your sig includes a link to the JB Fan Club... Smile This course sells for the very high price of $117, including shipping. Like Doug says, it is available from Scotty's. I ordered mine, used, from Alibris.com for $75. Used copies are not easy to find. I advertised for a used one in my local Craigslist and right here on the forum in December. I had no responses.

Doug, you are very welcome. The course arrived yesterday. It took me about 10 hours. I stayed up all night to create the Table of Contents. I did it for me but thought that many others here might like to know what is inside.

Paul, it is all TAB ONLY until Book Three - Advanced Material. Then, beginning with the 5 Major Scale Positions, it is all standard notation ONLY until the end. He teaches you how to read music as it applies to the (lap) steel guitar.

Kay, the course now comes with two CDs, rather than the original cassettes. All of the songs and many exercises, including the entire section on chord progressions is played by Jerry. Unfortunately, between each track there is an annoying 10 second stream of a high E note for tuning.

The reason that I ordered this course is so that I can make my own steel guitar arrangements from sheet music. On the last page, this is what Jerry Byrd says he is offering to the serious student.

Conspiciously missing was any reference to pentatonic scales or any arpeggio studies.

Ray,

Thanks so much for your labor in producing the TOC here for the forum, very very useful in and of itself in that it gives a bird's eye view (ahem...Byrd's eye..lol) view of our beloved lap steel guitar.

I also admire your dedication to learning the art of arranging for lap steel, your enjoyment of the instrument magnifies upon being able to successfully do this.

Best of luck with the Jerry Byrd instruction materials, knowledge is truly power!

Hi Josh, it was indeed my pleasure to go through this book one page at a time and provide a record of what is inside. If I had seen a TOC like this, I would have ordered it in the very beginning of my desire to learn the instrument. I feel that many other beginners will find that they need something like this so they can also learn to "do their own thing".

The other choice is to keep buying up every tab book that comes along in the hopes that there are 2 or 3 tunes that YOU want to learn to play, in the book.

I do plan to write a detailed review of this course. Also, I would like to see other opinions/reviews on this course, and other instructional materials for the serious student.
