Your NEW...old guitar. Can you believe it. Fender is selling new guitars that have been stressed at the factory to look like old road worn axes. S0 you don't have to pay whatever thousand dollars for a real one. $950 and up.

Think how amazed your friends will be when you show up at the gig with one of these. Wow Charlie, You gots one of them expensive guitars. You must be rich.

Is there one born every minute or what?

This is not new - they started this in the mid-90s.

I don't care for the concept of distressing the finish either, and wouldn't pay an extra dime for it. In fact, I prefer the NOS concept, in principle, and they make what amounts to the same guitar that looks shiny and new like one would have looked like back then.

However, in practice - to my tastes, the Fender relic custom shop guitars are the best they make, from a sound, choice of woods, and playability perspective. I have had a few of these that, frankly, blew away any old Fender I had ever touched. A lot of hand work goes into these, and some of them are really fine guitars.

My opinions, naturally.

The mid-1790's?

It's been going on with violins, other bowed instruments, and even furniture for hundreds of years.
J.B. Vuillaume was the expert at it back in the 19th century. He aged or "reliced" new violins so well that Paganini couldn't tell the difference between his old Guarnerius made violin and a new Vuilaaume relic.

Ha! Yeah, well we're talking about Fenders of course, so we know there's only one relevant '90's. Smile But sure, faking old instruments has been around for a very long time.

Actually, he said $950 and up, so I assume he was talking about all of them. No comparison between, let's say, the Joe Strummer relic'd Tele (MAP $899, at least when they came out, and street priced less than that if you look) and the nice custom shop relics, but that's not to say the Strummer isn't a good guitar. I've played a couple - one was very good, the other wasn't. The other point is that I've played some Mexican and Japanese reissue Strats and Teles that were just great - relic'd or not. I have this Mexican-made Palo Escrito Tele that I picked up for cheap and is great.

A big part of my point was that I evaluate guitars mainly based on their playability, tone, and cost value. If it's a killer guitar with good playability, good tone, and I think it will at least hold its value, I won't let some wear and chips get in the way.

I have played only a very few aftermarket relic'd guitars that really knock me out. I've tried lots of Nash Strats and Teles, but they seem pricey for a non-logo'd repro. I can usually find used real Fenders for similar money. Like I said, I won't pay an extra dime for the relicing on its own, but if I see a guitar which is relic'd and it's just killer, I check it out.
