So sad to hear. Walter was indeed a legend in the country music field. He was not only a great musician but also a great producer.

Walter and Cindy retired here in E Texas.
He enjoyed fishing with Connie Vaughn in Bullard Tx.\
He was a regular player at the ETSGA an a friend to all of us there who met him. He was one of the best people that you would ever want to meet.
He charmed us all with his music and personallity.
God love him.

I only met Walter this past year at one of the ETSGA meetings but I'll always treasure his kind comments and conversation. Our prayers are with Cindy and the entire family in this difficult time. Such a huge loss for them and for our small community.

From the East Texas Steel Guitar Association, of which Walter was a memeber, we feel a great loss. Our condolences to Cindy and family. Walter was able to play for us twice in 2008. Not only was he a great musician, but one of the nicest individuals I have ever met. We visited Walter and Cindy in their home in Bullard, and were treated like royalty. What great people, and a huge loss to the Steel Guitar world. Cindy, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I'm deeply saddened by the news of Walter's passing. I also consider Walter a "mentor", having first met him in 1975. His kindness and consideration will never be forgotten. Please accept my sincere and heartfelt condolences.

I just signed on this evening and saw this sad post...My heart is heavy. I had just sent Walter one of my wrenches and he was gracious in accepting the gift. He even sent me his home ph# to call him. May God rest his soul and my prayers go out to the Haynes Family. I just lost my Dad December 19th and this is another Great we've lost. Carl

I never had the opportunity to meet Mr. Haynes but from what I read, he was very influentual to the steel guitar and it's popularity. The Tennessean published a good article about him today and here is the link. He will be missed.

Walt and I spent a lot of time on stage and in the studio in East Texas and East Tennessee. He certainly did love these Smoky Mountains where he was born. He was a great friend to me and will be greatly missed!

Here are some clips of his great playing.

Walter will be truly missed, I never knew him like many of you. Our paths never crossed, I only knew as a producer that produced Jeanie Pruett and Cal Smith. A great man that will be truly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out his family.
