I was lucky enough to see him perform a few times. Once was in San Diego and just before the downbeat, Freddie stepped to the mic and said in this low and cool voice..."If you like the music...dig. If you don't...dance". Some drunk chick proceded to immediately stand up and dance at which point the entire room turned and stared her down...literally. It was a magical evening. _________________ Mike S.

I was just talking to my friend Randy Cannon about Freddy.
He got called, last second,
to cover for Cedar Walton (yikes!) with 10 minutes to go
before show time in front of 15,000 people....
Being the super piano player he is, he pulled it off.
He said Freddy was so happy to see him he picked him up while hugging him,
and Randy is NOT small.
And he had to FOLLOW Mcoy Tyner to boot.
McCoy had refused to back up Freddy except for one tune.
the ONLY tune in the set Randy knew from memory too...
You will know Randy as composer 'for hire' of
the music for the Loveboat Theme. He HATE, HATE, HATES it,
even if some of the changes are good,
if you ingore those damned words...
but it made him serious royalties.
RIP Freddy, you were cool,
long after Birth of the Cool.
You made a LOT of trumpet players REALLY work
to follow your lead. _________________ DLD, Chili farmer. Plus bananas and papaya too.
