I did a gig a couple of weeks ago in a Tiki Bar, as the featured "Hawaiian Steel Guitarist"!! Great atmosphere, awesome vibe, and a lot of fun. I forget that the general public don't get much exposure to steel guitar (at least in Sydney, Australia), and my little Deluxe 8 held the audiences attention for the whole set! (They even demanded an encore! Shocked Very Happy )

I had a blast, and I am inspired to learn more tunes, more about the instrument, and about Hawaiian music in general. Thanks to all the people here on the forum who have helped me learn more about playing steel guitar, whether it was via instructional materials, or advice, or just submitting thought provoking posts. I would not be where I am as a steel guitarist without you all. Thank you.

Here are some pics of the night

And finally, the real highlight of the night!

Where you solo?
If so, what an accomplishment! If not, still cool!
Look's like a neat room, and 'atmosphere'.

Great post.

Hey guys, thanks for the cool replies! Yes, the coconuts were real....though it was the swaying hips that had my attention!

I played some unacompanied things, like Aloha Oe, though for the majority of the set I used backing tracks... some Aebersold play alongs for jazzy instrumentals (Canteloupe Island, Watermelon man - I know, not Hawaiian, but sound nice with steel).

I also used some backing tracks from Rick Alexander and Herb Remingtons' Tuff Fun Tab - hope you don't mind Rick, but in the absence of a live band they make for great accompaniment! Songs like "Hawaiian Wedding Song" and "Song of the Islands" went over pretty well.

The next time I play this venue will be as a trio, no more backing tracks, and we will all be switching between bass, guitar and ukulele - no one touches my steel! The next step is to learn vocal melodies and harmonies to some of this material....wish me luck!

Dean,

Looks like a very fun night, especially given the ambiance of the Tiki Lounge and the lovely "Wahines" Whoa!

Did the ladies come standard with the Lounge on a regular basis and are they legitimate hula dancers?

Great shots, thanks for posting...

Aloha Josh!

The Wahines were indeed legitimate Hula Dancers, collectively they represented Hawaii, Samoa and New Zealand, so they were able to perform a variety of Polynesian dance. So far they have been regular performers at the Lava Room, however their "minder" whisks them away pretty soon after their set!

Next event the Lava Rooms people are holding is an Ukulele Night, in March. I am so stoked to be a part of this kind of thing here in Australia. I'll keep you all posted.
