I think the 'con' side of MagicJack is that your PC has to be on all the time for the phone to work.
Vonage, for instance, sends you an adapter that by-passes your PC, connects to your modem, and so can work with the PC off.
500 unlimited minutes/mnth with Vonage's cheapest plan. Was $14.99 when I signed up, but think it's now $17.99/month. By any phone standards, this is still dirt cheap. |

I've been considering Magic Jack, but as mentioned, you have to leave the 'puter on all the time or you have no phone (plus a higher electric bill).
Chip,
How is the Vonage service? Not to hijack the thread, you can email or PM me. Thanks. |

Vonage $17.95 a month.
Magic Jack $19.95 a year.Unlimited LD, Voicemail, 3 way calling.
For the $195.45 difference, you can probably afford to leave your computer on. Greg _________________ Derby SD-10 4&5 Black!(duh)/

The pros and cons of leaving your PC on "all-the-time" vs turning it on and off has been discussed here a few times in the past.
The concensus was(I think) your PC, and HDD especially, will last much longer if you don't leave the unit on all the time.
You wouldn't leave an iron or your car running all the time. |

A friend of mine up north tried it and gave up on it. It was a very weak signal and we had to hang up and call him back on our phone. Larry _________________ U12 Williams keyless 400

Well I thought I'd spent much more on other useless things.. so I got it.. have been using it for a couple of weeks, & so far it works just fine.. only once I dialed a number, & it didn't ring bur it went back to a dial tone.. I am in South Texas for the winter, & have been calling back home to Canada several times a day, plus other areas of the US, & it's been working flawlessly, (so far), hope it stays this way, but one never knows.. |

There are several behind the scenes variables at work here, any of which can result in a negative experience for Magic Jack users.
They include, but are not limited to the following.
- Effective upstream data transfer rate of your Internet connection
- Line conditions
- Firewall settings
- Router settings, especially wireless security type
- Other TCP/IP communications and applications running at the time you try to use Magic Jack
- The quality of your telephone and the phone cable
- Available bandwidth for your broadband connection
- Filtering, port blocking or data flow throttling done by your ISP to reduce bandwidth for VOIP devices not supplied by the ISP
