Quick one for a lap player. What do the A&B pedals do to what strings in E9. Thanks Eldon |

The A pedal raises strings 5 and 10 from B to C#, pedal B raises strings 3 and 6 from G# to A.
5 and 10 go from the 5th scale degree to the 3rd, 3 and 6 go from the 3rd scale degree to the root.
Chordal change across strings 3,4,5,6,8,10 is I to IV or E chord to A chord at the nut.

ELDON,
A GOOD EXAMPLE OF WHAT THE A & B PEDALS DO WITH E9 STANDARD TUNING IS:
STRINGS 4 5 6
KEY OF C 8TH FRET OPEN C MAJOR
PRESS A&B TOGETHER TAKES YOU TO AN F MAJOR
SLIDE UP TWO FRETS G MAJOR

Also, pedal A by itself gives you the relative minor chord (A minor on the 8th fret) so you can play "ice cream" changes.
There is also a knee lever that changes that minor chord into a major one, so in addition to stomping on the A and B pedals and moving up 2 frets to get to the 5 chord you can also make that chord by using the A pedal and the knee lever and moving down 2 frets. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Thank you everyone, I was looking to make a bit of sense re the E9 Tab that's out there and you gave me all I needed.
Brian, as far as that avatar I found it on the net a few years ago. I had access to a large plotter at work so my last day at work when I retired I pinned a 24" x 36" poster on the back of my office chair......and left for good. A final act of defiance I suppose.

Eldon, now that you know, there's no going back. You HAVE TO get yourself a pedal steel and join us all in in our insane quest to master it. ![Mr. Green](images/smiles/icon_mrgreen.gif) _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Tab: |
Open A&B
E9 A6
1 F# F#
2 D# D#
3 G# A
4 E E
5 B C#
6 G# A
7 F# F#
8 E E
9 D D
10 B C# |
The simple open E chord is on strings 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, with roots on strings 4 and 8.
The A pedal raises the Bs to C#.
The B pedal raises the G#s to A.
With those pedals down the new A chord is on the same strings (3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10), with roots on strings 3 and 6.
If you ignore the top two strings, you have the equivalent 8-string lap steel tunings. |
