I have been attending the last 6 years for the very fact that the first time I was hooked. The jam rooms inspired a guitar picker. The open jam rooms really kept the idea of the steel guitar alive. Until Scotty noticed these jams took attendance away from the main room. Scotty now has dampened the times in which we can jam and even started his own room with admission charges!!! See this is about money to Scotty not the love of music!! My friends dear Scotty will never get another cent from me or my friends. For the real love of music is in those small rooms like the Derby and Fulawka. Beware of the politics my friends for this will not bring in the younger generation to carry on!!!!!! |

That seems a bit harsh, Richard.
Those vendor jams rooms are great, but I know of no one who doesn't buy a ticket for the main room because of them.
The "After Hours Jam" (really not an open-jam) in the room behind Peavey has had a small fee (I think I remember $5) that is used to help the performer's costs. One year it was Norwegians, another year Ausies, and another year us Canucks. I see nothing wrong with that.
Please don't bash anyone here, comments are welcome, but if it starts to get dirty I'm closing the thread. |

Scotty doesn't care whether you are in the hall or not. he's already collected for your ticket. The jams can't possibly be putting a dent in the main hall show. Folks move about between all of them all day long. I haven't heard Eddie Fulawka say anything about his jam hours being curtailed, and I just saw him about 10 minutes ago. And trust me, he'd be the first to complain.
Scotty's after hours room is an organized show and as such costs a small fee for admission. This year it's Tom Morrell, and he's brought his whole band, so 5 bucks is hardly excessive.
Methinks you may be seeing conspiracies where none exist. I did notice last year that at about 3 AM security was not letting folks wander the basement and the rooms were closed. That would not be Scotty's decision, it would be the hotel's. And last year was weird because of some 9/11 related training that was going on here. Place was crawling with security types all weekend.

Richard, I must say I find it somewhat curious that, according to your profile, you've been a Forum member since November, 2001 and only posted once in all that time... and this is that one post. I hope you'll decide to join us in some constructive fellowship around steel guitar. |

Man, I can't let this one go by... !!
I went to my first convention in 1977, I had been playing barely a year, and drove my ol' beater pickup from K-Zoo to St. Louis with no idea where I was going to stay... The afternoon before the convention opened I went to Scotty's store, which was overflowing with the famous and not-so-famous, all wanting a piece of Scotty's time. Scotty had the amazing generosity to sit with me privately in his office for at least an hour, finding out about my interests and direction on steel, playing me some choice cuts, and giving me pointers and some free music and tab. He then hooked me up with a place to stay. I'm just one of thousands of pickers he's treated that way! I think very few people have any idea of the monumental effort, personal and financial sacrifice it's taken to promote and put on the Convention all these years- and most certainly not for financial gain! Mr. Douthitt, your name sounds like a pun, but I don't take your post as a joke. I don't know what planet you're from, but it's not the one where the Scotty I know lives.

Sure can fire some people up with an opinion, even get threatened to cut me out of the forum. Boys I am here to help save the music not kill it! I was personaly told by Scotty I was causing an uproar in those rooms and in his words "taking his crowd away" I went there as a guitar player and eventually bought a new Derby! I'm sorry but he offended me and others that have been going there over 15 years. I am 32 years old and been playing for 18 years. I have earned an opinion. Scotty might be your best buddy but he offended a younger generation. I also have bought tickets to the big room. |

I have great respect for Scotty, but we're by no means "best buddies".
No one threatened to throw you off the forum.
I've let this last here longer than I should have. |
