I can imagine almost the same controversial discussion when the Bass guitar started growing more strings with the differences being the tuning
(the bass is not 2 tunings in one)
but the addition of strings can be over whelming if you just dive in. My Brother has a 5 string and almost never uses the extended notes on the other hand My Dad rest is sole played his 4string 52 P-Bass until the day he died and was very good at it
Victor Wooten can make more music on his 4 string bass then most of us on 10 12 or 14 string guitars so when it comes right down to choosing S10 or D10 or 12universal its perceptional thing I don't think one is better than the other I can play a 10 it would be clumsy at first but I could do it and I would love it. Don't get me wrong I have a real job because I would starve to death if I had to rely on my playing I just think 12string youknee,s are cool as heck! But you have to be comfortable mentally and physically and some of us tend to suffer from paralysis by analysis I know I do Laughing
