I just bought a lap steel that came equiped with a humbucking pickup. The tone is okay, pretty bright for a humbucker! But I am thinking about trying a new p/u to get better sound.
I am spoiled by the tone of my 'Vintage' Silvertone (Valco Equiped) lap steel. I am never satisfied with the sound of many other steels I own, or have tested.
There are so many humbucker copies and after market manufacturers, I don't know where to begin looking!
Are there any Humbuckers that can get that "moan" I am looking for?
SILVERTONE
CLEAR LAP STEEL
Thanks

To point you in another budget-minded direction, Guitar Fetish makes a lot of different pickups, including humbucker-sized single coils -- what Gibson would call a P-94 instead of a P-90. The Mean-90 is vintage wound and the Dream-90 is overwound. I have a Mean-90 in the neck position of a Tele that is set up for slide, and it has an old-school sound that you might like for about $40....

Hello,
Pete Biltoft at www.vintagevibeguitars.com will
build you a humbucker that sounds amazing... I
just had a custom wound humbucker for my laptsteel
wound up by Pete.... I have a coil tap installed
for either single coil or humbucker mode... this
baby "moans".... also if you find your humbucker
to bright, you can swap out your Capacitor inside
your guitar and try different values that might
warm up your sound,
take care and good luck

I'm a big fan of putting a gibson PAF type humbucker as a second pickup in the neck position. It helps if you use a lap steel with a 25 1/2" scale and put the second pickup in exactly the same spot as the neck pickup in a Gibson SG.
I learned that from Derek Trucks (he pretty much only uses the neck pickup on his SG). |

You can try going to Seymour Duncan's website and listen to the soundfiles that they have for all their humbuckers, both clean and distorted. Maybe you will find something you like. _________________ Michael Brebes
