I take it you mean the `Panther Hall` album. I have it on worn out vinyl and would also like to get it on CD or download.

| Yes, you are correct, I could not recall the title of the album. I just remember LG's beautiful playing on it and trying to cop some of his licks, as I'm sure many did. Anyone have a line on this recording? |

It's been reissued on CD a few times (RCA, Koch), I don't know if it's officially in print right now or not but it should be possible to track one down. Have you done a forum search? This topic has come up before and I know there's information out there...

Seems like I remember reading on here, a long time ago, that one of the cd's that was released didn't have all the songs that the record had.
I think it was the Panther Hall recording, but it could be an age-related memory thing (CRS).

That is a SUPER one!
I have that one in my old LP collection. the same superb playing by Lloyd Green as on the Charley Pride Live LP.
It was a sad end to a great writer/singer when Glen Sherley chose to end his life. I loved his writing, so straight from the heart.
Sorry, but I have no way of copying to CD. Can anyone help?

Lee: You could be thinking of the George Jones Live at Dancetown record from 1965. The later releases left 8 tracks off the recording.
While I agree with Bent on the superb playing of Lloyd on the 1971 Glen Sherley lp, the quantity of playing doesn't come close to the Panther Hall recording.

No--Lee, you are correct. There was a reissue in circulation that for some reason left off one song. May have been the first cut, Tom Paxton's "Last Thing On My Mind" which would really suck to be missing.
I remember years ago a forum member smugly calling anyone who claimed this to be a fact an idiot (more or less). He then blamed Lloyd Green for misinforming him when the omission was proven to be true. One of those moments when you learn all you need to know about a person.
I have the CD Charley Pride "In Person" from Koch and it is complete. |

In reality Jon, there were 2 songs left off the recording. 1st song on each side. Either a counterfeit or a bootleg as I don't believe RCA/Koch would deliberately put out a cd like that.

That's probably the best explanation, Graham. I'm pretty sure, though, that these were being distributed by mainstream dealers. Where they got them....who knows?
Like I said, my copy is Koch and is ok.....BUT....if I'm not mistaken, Koch's name is mud with some of the stuff they've pulled (Dale Watson, comes to mind) so nothing would surprise me.
I didn't know there was a second song missing on those bad ones. |

A lot of major record labels release older material on "budget" lines with fewer tunes, so there's less royalties to pay among other things; I'm guessing that's what happened here on one of the RCA releases. Look at some of the CDs on racks in truckstops and convenience stores sometime, there's a lot of them like that. They used to do that with vinyl too, I just bought some old used Conway Twitty lps (cheap) on a budget subsidiary of MCA where there are fewer songs than the original album, but with the same title and artwork. A long time record company practice, to squeeze a few more bucks out of older material by selling it cheap to a different market.
The Koch version with all the songs is obviously out of print and considered "collectable" or it wouldn't be going for 40 plus dollars(!) but I'm sure they can still be found in some used CD stores for 8 or 10 bucks. I see it now and then. |
