This just in from the Jerry Douglas website:

Quote:
Congratulations to Jerry Douglas and Lloyd Green - nominated by the National Academy for Recording Arts and Sciences for a Grammy Award in the Best Country Instrumental category.

Jerry wrote "Two Small Cars in Rome" expressly as a setting in which to conduct an instrumental conversation with the esteemed Lloyd Green.

In his review of Jerry's initial performance as Artist In Residence 2008 for the Country Music Hall of Fame, Michael McCall writes:

Next up, Douglas brought out steel guitarist Lloyd Green. As far as I'm concerned, he's the best steel player that ever lived, Douglas said. When I was playing with the Whites, I would really study every move Lloyd Green made, on all those Don Williams songs, and every record by Charley Pride, Warner Mack, all those things. I would listen to how he phrased, and how he framed-in the singer and would make the singer better every time. I think Lloyd Green had a lot to do with shaping country music.

This nomination recognizes two redoubtable musicians for their beautiful language without words. The magic produced via their mutual admiration is palpable.

This piece is from Jerry's new album Glide, and as far as I am concerned, the entire album should have been nominated, but I am happy with this.

The funny thing about it is that to me, it doesn't sound much like country music at all, but the two lead instruments happen to be dobro and pedal steel.

Congratulations Jerry and Lloyd!

It's certainly an intriguing premise, and with these two players, it's just has to be great, no?

In my opinion, Lloyd Green should have won the award a long time ago.

Lloyd Green was the "Mr. Nashville Sound" and has probably played on as many hit records as anyone ever. The list of recordings he has embellished on with his creative style would read like the Who's Who of American Country Music.

His influence not only on hit records but on countless numbers of steel players, and not to mention the creative genius that he has exemplified has earned him the honor.

May GOD bless him!

I say it is high time that Lloyd be recognized with a grammy. Like Terry said, it should have happened a long time ago.
In my opinion, no other steel guitar artist has identified the Nashville Sound and molded artists around it like Lloyd did, back when country was country.
This huge man is not only a musical genius, but an intellectual genius in my estimation. His humility is one of his pro qualities. Congratulations Lloyd!

If you haven't heard "Mission Door" by Peter Cooper, you're missing out on some fine songwriting enhanced by some exquisite steel playing. Lloyd seems to me to be distilling his playing down to the essence; he plays what is necessary and no more. True artistry at the highest level.

As you can see there is some pretty impressive competition. And Jerry is "partially" up against himself because he is on the Charlie Haden piece from Charlie's new album Rambling Boy.

But I just love "Two Small Cars In Rome." I'll be driving somewhere and I'll hit the repeat button on the CD player and run through it three times in a row.

I don't have the Paisley Guitar album yet, I'll grab a copy at some point (I have a lot of respect for Brad compared to the vast majority of mainstream "country" artists) - but I'm going to put my money on him just because of the "star power" factor - and obviously, all of the guys on Cluster Pluck (what a great name!) are monster players.

I just downloaded the Paisley number (I hadn't heard it all the way through previously)and it is no doubt impressive to hear those master players hammer out some killer licks - but to me, as a musical composition, it doesn't hold a candle to the Douglas/Green tune.

WOW. That is some tough competition. I haven't heard any of the songs listed, but do hope Lloyd and Jerry can take it home.

My prediction though, is Paisley and his bunch will win just because of Brad's popularity and the fact he is not a "sideman" and more likely to get votes based on his "visibility".

You can listen to a sample at this link, but it's not long enough to form any kind of opinion about it - not for me anyway.

No need to "pre-form" an opinion - buy the Glide album, either by download or at the record store - it might be the best solo effort by Jerry in his career! Cool

Or short of that - you can always go to Rhapsody, sign up for a trial membership, and you can get 25 plays or something like that of songs in their entirety.

They have thousands of albums to choose from, and I would think that Glide is available.

Can't you buy the MP3 download from Amazon.com or some other vendor? This CD is available there for .99 per song.
