This subject has come up before. I will be flying to Hawaii soon and I will be taken my lap steel with me.
I am planning to use a padded gig bag as a carry on.
Will I have any problems with the airline?
Any suggestions?
Mahalo.

Hi Jozef,

I fly every week with my lap steel (bar, picks and Korg) in my suitcase. No problem, ever. As long as you don't try to carry on to much stuff (a suitcase and snall item) there should be no issues.

Good luck,
Michael

You should have absolutely no problem flying with a lap steel. If you have a separate bag for the picks and steel bar, I would recommend you run them through the security machines separately. I did not do this one time, and they pulled me aside to find out what these metal pieces were in my guitar case.

The TSA people seem to be pretty familiar with musical instruments. A smaller item like a lap steel will be no problem.

Thank you Michael and Brad for the information.
I was told before to put the steel bars in your luggage instead of your carry-on.
Again thanks for your advise.
