Hello to All and Happy Turkey Day!
This is such a wonderful forum, I have been "lurking" for years, however just joined the fold. Just a brief background: I started playing PSG in High School in Southern Califorina. This was about 1973, in my area there was one go to guy-Blackie Taylor in Hawaiian Gardens. My Dad bought me a Maverick and I took lessons from Blackie. Do any of you remember his shop there and the jams he used to host? It was there I first heard Maurice Anderson and the "Big E". I started playing the local bars at 17, does anyone remember Nashville West, The Swizzle Stick, the Foothill Club in Signal Hill? I remember the Foothill Club had a clock on facing the band and a sign stating no ASCAP songs just BMI tunes..yeah right. For graduation I got a beautiful blond Sho Bud Pro III which I went on the road with to Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas. Wish I still had it. Moved to Eastern North Carolina, bought a P/P D-10 Emmons from Jack Strayhorn at the Emmons factory in Burlington. Wow what great psg. Played in a house band in Washington, NC for 9 years with it. Moved back to Cal, got tired of toting the Emmons and went to a S-10 MSA. Wish I still had the P/P.
Now in Fresno, interested in hearing from any other players in the Central Valley. Thanks for reading my post.

I was also wondering..are there any steel conventions ,shows etc in California like there is back East? It seems most of the clubs are based there and in the South. Any California steel associations out there?

Mark, I live in Fresno also, call me anytime 277-2100... That goes for all you other pickers in this area too. I want to meet all the local pickers I can.

The only steel players I know around here are Pat Kemble, Paul Dobbs and Jim Baron. I did a gig with Billy Wayne Hamilton once and he is amazing too.

Recently I talked to another local Ron Silva (on the phone) but I haven't met him in person yet. Because right now, I'm going on 7 weeks of nursing a bad back.

When my back gets well, any local (or visiting)pickers are welcome at my house for coffee and if you're hungry, we'll at least whip you up a PB&J (peanut butter and jelly sandwich) Cool .

I get up at the "crack of noon" and music is my life so I'd like to meet all of you guys. Mi Casa Es Su Casa!

BTW, I'm in NW Fresno. When you come over you can play my push/pull for nostalgic purposes! Laughing
PS. Cool dog. It looks exactly like Lyle Tuttle's old dog.

Also thanks for the welcome from Alabama-passed through through but never had the chance to play there. You are right this wonderful Forum makes us all neighbors.

Mark,

Didn't Rod Stewart have a line in his song called Maggie May? I think it went something like this...

"Wake up Maggie I think I got some shoes to feed to you"

Or maybe it was The Chattanooga Chew Chew?

"Pardon me boys, Is that the dog that chewed your new shoes?" Laughing

And for Chris... Four Wives is 3 too many. I never knew you were a Mormon... I hope your family likes Peanut Butter! Come on down!

Thank you for those kind words. I was privaliged to meet Jos Pass when I worked at Group IV recording studio in Hollywood, CA. Group IV was owned by Angel Ballister, a good friend of Norman Granz and many classic Pablo side were cut there. During that time I also met Ella Fitzgerald..a very kind and wonderful lady.
I can guarantee that I am the only Steel Player on this forum that has ever recorded with the famous be-bop trumpeter Donald Byrd. I mean, this guy played with Charlie Parker. I some how wound up playing PSG on a record with him in the late 70's bad fusion stuff-he was being forced into that style from Electra/Asylum. Anyway the session included Claire Fischer and Pete Christlieb. They even got my name spelled correctly on the cover. Most of the steel was mixed out, however.
I'm glad to meet another Joe Pass fan-he was one in a trillion...

Early 70's, I was just out of the Army. First heard Buddy's steel sounds (with Judy Collins) some months earlier in the South China Seas. Curiosity drew me to the Blackie Taylor store front off of Norwalk Blvd.(in the town that is NEITHER= Hawaiian, nor Gardens!) I soon found out what it was that could make such compelling sounds, and eventually, saw the man hisself-- after Blackie moved his shop to a larger venue. (was it Garden Grove? =another city that was NEITHER!) I recall the grand opening(?) featured some touring steel players, including Reece. Buddy may have played also, or shortly after, doing his own promotional tour. Memory fades, but not the influence it had!
You will enjoy this forum, Mark and it's influences also. Plenty of great features and "motivational speakers".. Dig in! JON Z

Well,JOhn, Blackie sure had a shop in Hawaiian Gardens in 73-74..I bought a Pro III from him there. I know he moved to Garden Grove later on Garden Grove Blvd...then Orange. I was off to Colorado in 74 so kind of lost track of him until his recent store near Riverside.
Thanks for the advice on the forum, it is great resource. You must have encountered Blackie later than I did.

Welcome Mark. I always consider Fresno to be my home town even though I left there for good in 1970. We moved a lot throughout the San Joaquin Valley, from Sacto to Bakersfield. I didn't play steel when there, but I picked a little with Paul Dobbs, great guy, and less with Billy Wayne. There was a terrific steeler there named Wayne Carlock, I wonder about him sometimes and if he's still around. Played many places in town, the old Johnnies Tavern for about three years or so. Went to Jr high in Highway City, 'bout as NW Fresno as you can get. The first house I ever bought was in Clovis. I've been gone a long time but I still miss it in a lot of ways.

Howard, you wouldn't believe Fresno now, sadly the fig trees are almost all gone. Paul is still playing and so is Billy Wayne. I've never met Carlock but I've heard his name forever.

If your memory serves you well, east of the tracks that run along Golden State are now homes all the way to Herndon Ave. When my Greyhounds would get out of the yard, they would usually get chewed up by loose pit bulls in Highway City.... luckily, they were much faster! It's not a good place to be anymore. BTW, there is no school in Highway City at all.

It's a small world, when I emailed Mark, I gave him directions to my house... He called me and strangely, we live on the same street... 10 houses apart. I could hit his house with a golf ball... If I was Tiger Woods! Laughing

Hey Mark, I knew the Leightons well. I still get an email from Sharon from time to time. Her last name's Joyner now. She married a guy named Marvin Joyner after John's passing from Lou Gehrig's disease. I worked the military base circuit for a while with a rotund lady named Martha Lou and we'd do some things with the Leightons. I got to know them and their musicians, a guitar player named Ray Williams and their drummer was named Joe Sola or Solo. Later they went to the Nashville West in El Monte.

Was that club on Beach Blvd. named Shire's? It used to be in two sections until it was remodeled into one large room. It's a Mexican restaurant & bar now.........JH in Va.

Whan I posted my story, I thought there wouldn't be a PSG within miles of me-and here's Dan 10 houses down with one of my favorite ever steel guitars-A P/P Emmons!
Howard, thanks for the reply, I'm a newcomer to Fresno so don't know much of the history like Dan does. I used to live "Down South" in NC, even though a native of So Cal there are a lot of things I miss about living in the South. I loved the pace, people and music.
Jerry, Sounds like you made the southern move-VA Beach is a very nice place, I've been there many times when transiting the ICW. I was in a band with John Leighton' son John Jr, we got some guest shots around that area from Sharon. I know she had remarried, I had some corispondence with her a few years ago. I also received a mail from Skeeter Schutz who I kinda remember from those days.I was just a young kid starting out-those guys were the A team for sure!
