Howdy folks, I was wondering if anyone knows the particulars of Billy Robinsons' Derby steel guitar?
I am interested mainly in the scale length and string spacing. I believe he uses 10 strings on a 12 string width fretboard...I don't know what that actually equates to.
I am thinking of building a 10 string, and would like a wider spacing than a 10 string PSG, to allow for easier slants, and behind the bar pulls. I am currently playing a Fender Deluxe 8, which is fine for now, though I am keen to add 2 chromatic strings on top of my A6 tuning. I have already dropped the low F# and added a B on top, pseudo-pedal licks, ahoy!
Thanks for your time. _________________ If it’s on the ground it can’t fall down. |

Dean, have you seen this video from the '07 ISGC Hawaiian Show?
It's Billy's response to Danny Hammers asking about his tuning:
Billy Robinson Explains His Tuning
Billy's guitar is indeed a 12 string Derby modified for 10 strings.
I think it's a 24 1/2" scale.
The string spacing is parallel.
It may possibly be 3/8", but I'm not certain of that
Here are a couple from the '08 Show that show his techniques close up:

Thanks to Jeff Strouse for the great camera work!
This is Billy's web site with his contact info:

Thanks for the replies guys, you are what makes this place so great.
Drew, before annoying Charlie and Margit personally I will explore these other avenues! (and annoy fellow forumites in the process!)
Rick, I have indeed seen those you tube clips, numerous times...it is inspiring stuff indeed. The clip where he explains his tuning is what inspired me to try the "chromatic" B string on top of my A6 tuning (which I learned to play via your instructional material with Mr Remington). I think an additional D string on top of this will create even more possibilities...I am sure this has been done before, but it is new to me.
24 1/2 scale length is interesting...I have the short scale on my deluxe, which i think is 22 1/2???
And Rick, what is the spacing on your triple-8 Remmy?
I am about to order Billy's steel instrumental CD's from his website, so i will politely ask him about his guitar, if anyone is interested I will post back any info I can.
Cheers,

Dean, the Steelmaster spacing is 3/8" at the bridge tapering to 5/16 at the nut - same as a Stringmaster.
My triple neck is a 22 1/2 scale guitar. |

Hi John, I just did a search and saw you recently had your Remington T-10 for sale...looks like your keeping it now? If I had the funds I would seriously have considered it!
It seems to be a bit more affordable at this stage to just go ahead and try building a single 10 string, though I am sure a double or triple neck Remmy is in my future!
Did you keep the same string spacing as on an 8 string Steelmaster?? _________________ If it’s on the ground it can’t fall down. |

Dean; Actually, my T–10 is still for sale, if anyone wants it at the present price-listing w/o the 1/2 on the shipping, (out of the US)! I don't have it set up at the moment, but; if I recall, I think I ordered it with the 8-string spacing of 3/8” & 5/16”, but; I'll have to measure it again, next chance I get. Maybe I'll fill in those measurements here tomorrow! It's just that I have too many (3) guitars and it takes too long to get around to each one! This is not to be considered as a FOR~SALE ad! I'm merely answering your question about it being for sale or keeping it. Either situation suits me! Try me if/when you're ready. _________________ <marquee> Go~Daddy~Go, (No), Go, It's your Break Time</marquee> L8R, jb
