This guitar was finished in late July. Gregg McKenna posted earlier pictures of this guitar and a blog of the building process on his website.

I have converted it into an electric because that suits my needs best in a live band situation. Unplugged it has a quieter sound than a 6 string but sweet none the less.

You can see a detailed decription of the conversion process in this forum topic:

Cool-looking guitar! What woods did Gregg use? What brand are the blue strings, and are the plain strings in the set also blue? Or is that a DIY job? What's your tuning and why the color-coding?

Stephan - the guitar is made of birch. You can find more than you want to know here:

http://www.mckennaguitars.com/

I have had this strung up in extended open E, E13, and now I have switched it to E9/B6.

The blue strings are 2 from a pack of DR brand color coated. They are nothing more than a visual seperator for the D and F# strings. Helps me to regain my bearings coming off of an open E based tuning.

Greg, I thought you might have had that purpose in mind. I had the same idea, thinking about expanding my A6 by one string on top, which is already messing with my mind since I've been trying out the high end of this "improvement" on a 6-string steel.

That's why I asked if the plain strings also were color-coated. If/when I ever expand to 10 strings, I'll probably use a different color for the 1st string. (Haven't seen the blue ones before, just black and gold. They say the black strings sound better...)

Stephan, go to:
http://www.drstrings.com/main.html

Click on the catalog link and you 'll see the colors/coated section. The plain strings are colored as well so it sounds like that would work for you.

Okay, I'll bite. What does your E9/B6 tuning actually look like?

Great looking toy, and a concept I'd thought of on occasion.

I certainly didn't install the tuning machines like that. Sad

No - Gregg McKenna did not install them like that. Embarassed

I am trying out the mini rotomatic locking tuners and without re-drilling the screw hole, that's the way they fit.

Looks a little odd I know. If I keep them long term, I'll straighten em out.

The E9/B6 is the same as standard pedal steel, just lower the E's to get B6.
