I am too lucky to play with these guys:
Stoney and the House Rockers! No words can express it. He and his band are the best and Stoney gives the pedal steel a chance to be a part. They are the greatest!!! Just a name an established Blues Band that will let a steeler sit in!!!
Pure blues at their best and they let me in!!!
GO SEE THESE GUYS!!!!!!
Ricky...

Sounds like fun. You're right, a lot of blues bands don't see a role for pedal steel, but I think it fits great. Many blues players I know are intrigued by its possibilities, but not everybody has room for another voice.
There are some. Soul/Blues/Gospel standouts The Holmes Brothers out of NYC have used pedal steel over the years, including the fabulous Gib Wharton and Greg Leisz. The entire sacred steel phenomenon - quite a lot of players - is closely related to blues, although it is its own thing. I know David Doggett works with a blues band regularly in Philly. I'm trying to work up a project mixing soul, blues, and honkytonk country right now. Other forum players also play blues fairly regularly.
It's all good. |

Glad y'all are playing some blues on pedal steel. I have a blast doing it. Once blues people hear it, they love it. |

Yes - I've always thought that a pedal steel would be a definite added dimension for a blues band . . There's probably alot of folks out there that have known that for a while - - But I'm kind of a new guy on the bus, and it was one of the reasons why I'm learning to play - It's taking the whole concept of slide guitar up a few notches - and even in my fledgling stage people say Wow! I didn't know a steel guitar could sound like that! I just wish I was better at it !I just gotta work harder to get there! _________________ The only things in life I truly hate - fleas , fruit flies , and building furniture |

[b] Im still learning on 6 string lap steel and I have had 3 blues bands and two country bands ask me to sit in even if im half bad!!! Seems not a lot of people want to play PSG or Lap steel, but they sure arent a lot of us in Northwest Montana. Seems Sonny Rhodes made a fine living playing lap steel blues, so go figure? I'll jes keep on keepin on till I learn this steel thingy. _________________ "Steel players are like fine wine, we get better with age" |
