The picture of the "weird" guitar is one made by Sage Harmos, formerly of Minneapolis, MN, now living in Boulder, CO. Sage is the builder of real lightweight lap steels, that can be sat on a lightweight pedestal, that together will weigh about 20 lbs. This is the first and only pedal steel that Sage made, and indeed it is played by Robert Randolph. Sage uses composite material to build his guitars, and is inspired by the Geodesic style used in some of Frank Lloyd Wright's designs.

He has just finished a guitar for Jerry Douglas, and I am sure is willing to discuss the purchase of his guitars with anyone interested in looking at an innovative design. I don't have his web address handy, but you can do a search for harmos guitars, and it should bring up his web page.
