Would someone please give me the proper procedure for adjusting the c pedal on a guitar i know it raises 4&5 but i can not get it to adjust right. I have had this guitar for years and it has never been any trouble Thanks in advance.

Donald,

Describe exactly (in more detail) on what's taking place. Simply C Pedal won't tune up, is pretty broad.

Did you change string sizes?
When did you first notice it, after doing what?

Anything that helps more in giving a clue, is always helpful..

John Bechtel is one who definitely knows Derby inside and out.

When i try to tune the strings with the nylon tuning nuts with the pedal down i can't get them to tune high enough. After i turn on the tuning nut it starts to raise the open string. I have backed all the way off the tuning nut and start over but it does the same thing

Donald, does your c pedal bottom out ? It Sounds like you don't have enough travel. The raise on the C pedal is a very long pull.

I sent you an email.

Donald,

Is this what you're saying.. You backed off all the way on your Nylons.. Did you then, FIRST tune up the guitar OPEN while they were backed all the way off?

Meaning, if you didn't change strings, before it happened, then what actually took place first before that started happening?

When it's tuned open, is there any slack at all on those nylons?

Is there possibly a broken string End lodged in the changer system?

Have you looked (with a light) to see if the finger while at rest (tuned open) is in tack and where it should be?

Did you do any work underneath the guitar, add anything, move anything?

Again, make sure there are no broken string ends or anything lodged in the changer.

Are any Springs unhooked or broken?

As I've said, "John Bechtel" is the man to look up on a Derby. Send him an email. Hell have you up and running in no time flat. If you can't find the problem in any of the above.

Again, with everything working right, and the steel tuned up open, there should be some slack (free play) on all of the bellcranks, and pull rods.

When it won't tune up to pitch, when you release the pedals, is there slack then at the endplate tuners?

Make absolutely sure, that the finger is where it's suppose to be, fully at it's normal rest position, first after tuning it up at the Keyhead.. If it's not, find out the reason why it isn't returned where it should be at rest. Then it will give folks more to go on.

PS: Your Post, DERBY STEEL, doesn't say enough to draw the attention you need. Possibly repost saying:
Help Needed On A DERBY

I believe that would get you the help you need. Lots of folks pass up topics that are vague. Hope that helps..

I had this exact same problem with my ShoBud and the problem was not enough travel on the C pedal. I increased the travel by adjusting the stop on the C pedal. I needed just a hair more travel so I removed a little felt pad that was underneath the pull arm of the C pedal crossbar then I backed off the tuning nuts on the 4th and 5th then tuned the open string and finally tuned the C pedal tuning nuts. All fixed... Very Happy
