Ken, what updates? Are you trying to get the Vista updates or updates for a program or Drivers?

Control Panel/System and Maintenance/Windows Update to check for updates, if you don't have automatic updates set.

Jack, when I open Windows updates from the control panel it opens a Window for updates and never does a thing after that. The hourglass/timer is running and it never finishes the task.

Ken;
What is your operating system and service pack version? What version of Internet Explorer are you using to visit Windows Updates?

Have you scanned for malware infections today? There are several types of malware that will redirect requests for Windows Updates to your own machine, preventing you from accessing the website. Do other websites load ok?

There has been the rumor that bill gates is getting rid of vista either end of this year or march time due to vista having so many problems with it updates and its other bugs and floors.

really he should not have brought out vista its a basic copy from MAC i'l have a look about some forums i know about this for you.

i know its something you have to enable as its a dll file that not enabled properly which you have to run. again give me a day or two and i'l find out. this is one reason why i down graded back to windows xp vista looks snazzy but is less secure than windows xp.

i need to know are you getting an error code when you update

Try opening Internet Explorer and running manual Windows Update via the browser's menu item TOOLS > Windows Update.

Sorry for the delay in getting back! We are out of town and access to the net is very limited.

The bug was my Firewall! I removed Zone Alarm and went back tot he Windows Firewall for now and I am able to update!!!

Ken,

You should remove Zone and install Trend-Micro. It does the protection and updating all in one process. The program has never failed me, and I have running it for three years.

Also, I have been with Vista since its inception--no failures and no problems.

Here is my web page about Trend Micro's Internet Security 2009, in case any of you want to try it for free for a month, or purchase a subscription. It contains a 2 way firewall that is better than ZoneAlarm and it integrates with the other security components in the suite.

We are still traveling. Just got a chance to get back online today and downloaded Sunbelt Firewall. My son is a network type person (10 1/2 years in the Airforce and 3 years civilian work). He recommended it. Thought I wouyld give it a try.

Wiz, say your recommendation after I already installed Sunbelt. Would have done that, had I checked here first!

Sunbelt Personal Firewall, formerly Kerio Personal Firewall, formerly Tiny Personal Firewall, originally AtGuard Personal Firewall. Basically the same program, with a different name and interface, for each incarnation. Older versions may not Stealth your PC from all port probes. I used the AtGuard Firewall before most people knew what a firewall was.
