I'm trying to get into the ancient art of dobro in order to be a more well-rounded steel guitarist. Thus, I've been shopping for a resonator in the $500-$1000 range which will serve me well, and I thought I'd stop and ask here first if anybody had any brandnames or models which they could recommend? |

Gold Tone Beard, and Wechter/Scheerhorn - try to play models from both companies.
The former is designed by Paul Beard and manufactured in China under the direction of Gold Tone.
The latter was designed by Tim Scheerhorn and manufactured in China under the direction of Wechter, though I have heard that Wechter may have recently sold off that line of guitars.
A third option is a used OMI Dobro in good condition, any number of which works in your price range, manufacture from the 70's to the 90's.
Where do you live in California?
And there are some decent used Gibson Dobros in that price range as well (they bought the company in the 90's). _________________ Mark |

their are also metal body guitars either tricone or biscuit bridge. republic guitars would be your best choice in that case. |

I second that. I bought a 1976 OMI Dobro in fine condition for $770. After some set-up and work by Mike Lewis at Fine Resophonic it sounds wonderful. And it has its original (spun) OMI cone. It has a more mellow "old" sound than many modern Dobros, which I prefer - YMMV.

I'd highly agree.
There's a late model Dobro I recently posted on the buy/sell page (if you're looking for one of those). |

If you can get your hands on a Quarterman QC-4 you'd get a really nice traditional sound and probably a better tone than the stock cone. |

True enough, AJ, but if Kyle is being style specific more toward the squareneck tricone arena, there would certainly be different answers.
I don't believe a biscuit bridge guitar, for example, which is typically a roundneck, falls under the heading of as Kyle wrote, "a more well-rounded steel guitarist."
Going on general information, I would imagine a wood bodied squareneck, with a spider bridge, is the ticket here.
But it's Kyle's thread, so if he wants to be more specific then it's up to him to chime in.
Kyle - check out this Wechter/Scheerhorn for sale on www.reso-nation.org:

To clarify, I did have a wood-bodied squareneck resonator in mind, though beyond that I have no idea the difference (i.e. spider bridge, tricone, etc.). I think I am pretty narrowed down to a Paul Beard Gold Tone or a Wechter/Scheerhorn, though cruising ebay this one just popped up and I'd like your opinions on it gentlemen if you got the time:

Mark, to answer your earlier question I am in Berkeley, trying to get a college degree while preparing for my career as a steel guitarist
Also, Gregg, I did notice that Dobro which you put up, though it is pushing my price range a little bit... maybe you could sell me on it with a little more description? |
