Ok..... Here goes. I have been ask to set up my steel and play on Sunday morning services with the praise and worship group. This only after playing and learning how to play for a "Year". I will not at this time take any rides, I plan on doing just pads and phrases. Maybe some turn-arounds and endings,[if I can find some. intros also". My big problem right now is I am not up that much on Chords and where to grab them. Using just the neck of the guitar I am ok, but how to get the same chord by using the pedals and levers I still need some help. My timeing is good due to the fact that I played drums proff. even tho there are drummers out there that tend to "speed or slow". I wasn't one of them. My ear is still pretty good at 74......... So I guess what I am asking guys ........... Is advice and can you recomend a good book,dvd,tabs on chords like a chord dictonary. Also fills, turn-arounds,intros., and endings. I know this is alot to ask, and I may be biteing off more then I can chew. But I've got to start sometime  Thank guys

Jack, it might be an idea to see if they can get you a song list - that way you can prepare before you get there.

Just using the normal 3/4/5 - 4/5/6 - 5/6/8 - 6/8/10 chord grips you can play most of the required chords for quite a few songs using the "no pedal" position as the root (1) position.
In the key of G it would go thus;
G no pedals @ 3rd fret
Am - BC pedals @ 3rd fret
Bm - E-Eb KL @ 3rd fret
C - AB pedals @ 3rd fret
D7 - B pedal& E-Eb KL @ 3rd fret
Em - A pedal @ 3rd fret.
So you can stay on one fret and play alot by using your pedals and KL's.
If you use the AB pedals down chord as your root position, it spreads out over a 2 fret span, but its easy to use also.
In the key of G from pedals down it would be;
G - AB pedals @ 10th fret
Am - A pedal @ 8th fret
Bm - A pedal @ 10th fret
C - no pedals @ 8th fret
D - no pedals @ 10th fret
Em - E-Eb KL @ 8th fret.
Of course, you can mix and match using some from both patterns, but as a simple way to get the most commonly used chords in any key these seem to help most of my students to focus on an area of the neck that they can use to get the job done and play the songs they want to. Hope this helps.

Please let us know how this goes. I am trying this. We never practice during the week. I get the songs on Sunday morning just before church. They are mostly contemporary gospel. I am not a great player and not very innovative. I try to cover the major chords. Partially, I am trying to learn to hear the chord changes. That part seems to be working

Hi Jack,
I play in the praise band at our small Methodist Church. It is a very rewarding gig.
Follow the KISS plan of attack. (Keep It Simple Stupid)
The chord positions mentioned above will keep you plenty busy for quite a while.
