Kay recorded a very pretty photo montage/steel guitar tune about his recent trip to the Maldivian Islands.

Although the steel guitar sound also lends itself to the tropical islands, we do not hear of this association frequently in the forums. I believe that the sweet and languid sounds of the steel guitar could only have been associated where Mother Nature is gentle and colourful. Hawaii, of course, answers all these requirements and that is probably why the steel guitar originated there, no accident.
A few years ago a New York publisher contacted me with the need for new music on steel guitar with "natural, rustic" sounds. In response I composed this tune, called "Sunrise at Coco Palms". I have now made a video for it and include it for the forum's listening and viewing pleasure.
The journey began from Singapore (where I then used to live) one late evening, and we flew to the capital of the Maldivian islands, arriving late at night. We were flown over, in the very early hours of the morning, by sea-plane (takes off and lands on water) to one of the many thousands of islands that constitute the Maldivian archipelago. Coco Palms is an island about 500 yards in radius, where we saw pristine white sands, graceful palms trees galore, unbelievable colours of the ocean, sandy paths to our isolated bamboo huts....a tropical paradise where time seemed to have no consequence. Dinner was fish cooked just out from the fishing nets.
These experiences inspired me to compose "Sunrise at Coco Palms". It features just guitars and steel, some "raw" tones that seemed to fit in well with the rustic nature of our surroundings. Accompanying me on this tune were my two sons, David and Richard, on bass and rhythm guitar respectively, and their friend Archie Fairhurst, on rhythm guitar. The video portrays the journey and some of what we saw.
Do not expect perfection on this recording, but hopefully it will make you experience some of that splendid feeling of isolation when you have nothing but the sun, the sand and the sea; Mother Nature all to yourself... |
