Here's a cool picture of Don Helms. It looks like he's playing an old Sho-Bud D-8. I found this picture on the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper site.

That's a D–9 Sho-Bud. Don played a Blonde D–9 with the Wilburn Bros. Show. _________________ <marquee> Go~Daddy~Go, (No), Go, It's your Break Time</marquee> L8R, jb

My personal favorite, Don with one of his students.
We met at Mickey D's one morning for breakfast to have me look at a guitar of his, an S-8 Sierra.
There was a camera in the car, we couldn't resist. He had the greatest sense of humor as any man I have ever known. _________________ John Drury

Here is a pic of Don and me at Jeff Bradshaw's Canadian Steel Show in Caroline, Alberta, June 23rd, 2008. He died less than two months later. I believe this may have been his last show, although I'm not totally sure about that. Either way, it was pretty amazing to meet him and talk for a bit. We took a group photo of all the players that day, and boy did I feel proud being in that photo next to Don.
Here is a snap of Don's guitar ( the world's most famous D-8 ) at rest on stage after his set, complete with the setlist of all the classics that bear his trademark sound.

Chris,
The old "Red Guitar" as he called it.
He was kind enough to let me take a whack at it on one ocaission. Sounded kinda weird when I was behind it, go figure!

wonderful topic, when years ago me and Sheila went to the NTSGA jam in Nashville, she said Don was her favorite player...he was a true gentleman and superb musician who left deep influence on the world of the steel guitar...I`m sure he is making music now again, with Hank...

Wow, I never had the guts to ask him if I could play it. That must be a really cool memory for you!
Mickey, we didn't get to talk about Don when we were in St. Louis. We'll have to chat in Dallas!
Jim, nice pics for sure. As I recall, you got a lot of shots that day. How about that group one? I'd love to see that one. BTW, I replaced "Calgary" with "Caroline" in my original post.....how could I have screwed that one up?? _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

Great shots--thanks. I'm sorry I never had the pleasure of meeting the man, he sounds like a great guy. Does anyone know where his guitar is? I hope it's heading to the Smithsonian. |

Chris: Here is the group photo you requested from the Caroline steel show this past June. Note that John Lacey wasn't in the photo & neither was guitarist, Dave Hamilton. I hadn't noticed that you had said "Calgary" instead of "Caroline!" I didn't know that one could correct a Post once it had been sent - thanks for this info! Jim H.

Thats a beautiful picture of dons guitar and the set list, those white fretboards reminds me of hanks Suit he used to wear. Sends shivers down my spine.
That picture sets the stage for a great CD cover gentlemen if anybody ever does a don helms tribute. _________________ A.K.A Chappy. |

Thanks, Larry....it was an image I felt worth capturing. I think I have a few pics from the angle where the setlist is straight up as well.
Jim, that photo captured the proudest moment I've had yet as a steel player. Thanks for taking it. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

Thankyou chris, beleive it or not, i woke up that night thinking about that photo, thats a spooky picture, but man... its powereful, Hank is an American icon and those pictures of don and his wife, and of course his Steel guitar really hit me, and i grew up in the 70's and 80's, loving the hank sound and American country music!
Don's with Hank now , his old freind the Troubadour! _________________ A.K.A Chappy. |

I saw Chris and Don in St. Louis '06. Fabulous.
Larry, what I like most about the setlist are the counts before each tune , like "3412", etc. Gotta love it! _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

In these pictures it looks like Don is using a Stevens style bar. Was this the bar he usually used? |

Great thread regarding a great steel guitar icon and fellow steeler I have known since our Opry days in the early 50's. Highly worthy of a bump to keep it going. _________________ Pioneers of Western Swing HOF, Seattle 2005
