a French steeler here wants to know what's the width between string 1 & 10 at the changer & at the roller nut
also, he seems to have low volume level on string 3 compared to the other strings
what would be a good replacement pu if needed ?

CB........what string gauge is he using on the third?A heavier one might increase the tone and volume. Some people tend to put a lighter string up because they are afraid of that string breaking. |

I've owned a Starter for about a year and a half and noticed that low volume on the third string when I first got mine. Not thinking about that, but just to see if there was a difference in sound, I tried a set of stainless strings. The tone is about the same as with the nickel strings, but the volume level between the strings seems to me to be more even. It might be worth a try. Crowbear, did he try changing that string to make sure it's not dead? Possibly while it's off, make sure there isn't a piece of lint on top of the finger or at the roller end. That could sure cause it. |

Try a GL 10-1. That worked well on mine. |

Posted 31 Oct 2008 11:41 am Some dimensions on the Tonealigner pickup
|
|
Maybe this will help in seeing if the pickup cavity in the guitar will hold a Tonealigner.
The bottom plate of the Tonealigner is 3 3/4" by 1 7/8". The pickup is 3/4" in height and any amount you would screw up the allen screws above this would increase the height toward the strings.
There are 4 slots for the fitting screws to hold the pickup down. On each side you have 2 screw slots 2 3/8" center to center and drilled 1/8" from the edge of plate to the center of each screw. The slots are 1/4" long to accomodate and slide the pickup back and forth to make an exact fit under the strings of the guitar.
On the upper side where the allen screws are from the 2 furthest allen screws where the #1 string is and the #10 string is located is 3" center to center.
The physical size of the top part of the pickup is 3 3/4" by 1 3/8". You have 20 adjustable allen screws (2 per string). The allen wrench is included with the pickup. There are 2 wires a red and black wire, so wiring up the pickup is just like any other single coil pickup. Hook it up to the hot and the ground and your off and running. Then adjust your allen screws to make your guitar sound the best it can sound and better than it has probably ever sounded before. A weak string like the #3 string is solved by cranking up the allen screws on the #3 string and that increases the volume of that string until it is equal to or what you expect it to be by your ear. No more weak strings in the set of 10.
I can be called direct to help you with anything or to place an order. We have the standard wide format pickups in stock and the Sho-Bud mount types are shipping very shortly.
Sincerely,
Gary Sill

Crowbear, I believe that the E-66 is a brighter pickup, that should work, if indeed it is the pickup at all. It could even be the finger.
Did he buy it new or used? 10-1 they usually put on the C6 neck, to give it more body. (hope I'm right on that). I think, I don't know for certain though, that the Carter D-10 ships out standard with E-66 on E9th, and a 10-1 on the C6th.
I should think the E-66 pick up, would work. I have no idea what a Carter Starter has for pickups. Others should know.
I sure would explore all other possibilities before I went for a new pickup, unless I first used a guaaze (spelling?) meter on the pickup.
