Now don't start flogging me but I wanted to say that the steel sound on Billy Coopers home page is absolutely beautiful. This is the sound that makes steel so appealing to many of us.The player is not playing fast or difficult stuff but listen to it sing. The steel can produce such beautiful music that the coyotes come out of the woods to dance.
Now we all know that you can make your guitar sound anyway you want to but you must admit that the sound of that guitar on Billy's web site is heavenly.
By the way Billy..Is that you playing?
What guitar and amp are you using?
Great player..great sound
Is this a great country..or what?

Yep..Thank you CT for that info..I don't know how to put a web page on there with my post.
Isn't that playing beautiful? Hes playing on a MCI. Is that correct? Boy..I tell you..nothing wrong with that sound.
That Billy can play.
Oh by the way CT, How you doing on that PP you got from Dana? Is it a keeper?
Maybe will see you some day as I am up to Danas alot lately. Hes coming to my house soon and I'm going to feed him lobsters. Lobsters are very cheap now and I guess hes worth it...just kidding of course
See you some day

If the recording was done with the setup he has in his backroom, the guitar is an MCI D-10 played through a Nashville 400. Billy is indeed a fine player and a real gentleman (who also happens to operate an outstanding steel guitar shop.) |

Well Ray
I see that both you and Cartwright are from Portland ..Your on the left and he is on the Wright.....Cart..Wright that is.
I would say that someone from Maine named your city. Because as the lumber industry moved out west, a lot of the log workers from Maine moved with it.
I only know of Billy Cooper thru his web site but I would say that the man is a very experienced and well known player. He has to be to play that good.
Maybe someone will chime in and give us some scoop on him.
Why do you say that you don't have access to many players out there. Do you live in the woods? Well come on out of there. Its a wonderful world with lots of great steel players.

David
This doesn't sound to me like a backroom kind of recording(if you know what I mean)
How about that sound that he is getting. If that is a Nashville 400..what else does he have in line? I hope that he sees this thread and lets us all know.
Where is he located in Virginia. I could stop in and chat with him on my way down to Forida this winter.

Hi Roger
Nope ..the boat is too slow. I go by auto. Not sure if and when I'm going as I still have at least 2 more months of lobsterfishing to do. I will be around on Nov 8. I enjoyed listening to you the other nite. Perhaps I will see you there Nov 8.

Robert...I should have worded my post a little more clearly. Billy keeps his guitar and amp set up in the back room of his shop, however I agree I don't believe recording is done there....The address for Billy's shop is:
20504 Constitution Highway
Orange, Va. 22960
The trip would be well worth your time. Almost every major brand of steel guitar is setup and ready to play and you will hopefully have the opportunity to meet two very cordial people, Billy and Wanda Cooper. |

The "sound equation" goes something like this...
smooth player + decent steel + decent amp = great sound
That's all that's required, really. |

Thanks David
I go down 81 and than take 77 below Roanoke. I will look up where Orange is on map and plan my trip so that I can visit.
You are absolutely right Donnie. I am finding that out all the time. Two people can sit down to the same guitar and sound very different.
I guess I like the smooth steel sounds and Billy is one smooth cat. The sound that he has is so pretty that you can hear the angels harmonizing with him.
Just beautiful, thats all I can say.

Here's some info on Billy:
http://www.billycooperssteelguitar.com/corp.htm
If the link doesn't work, go to the page "About Us" for more info.
Billy and Wanda are great people, and equally as great to do business with. I bought my entire new rig from them back in May. Their catalog is much more extensive than on their web site.
The song on his web site, Healing Hands of Time, is on his CD titled "Billy Cooper - Steel Guitar." I have the album, and everything on it is great.
Also, the legendary Buddy Charlton teaches pedal steel at Billy's shop, and he they have some albums and courses together. _________________ Steeless. |
