A post in the current thread "Best Players"has prompted Me to begin this thread.
There was a mention of underrated players, several were listed.
Being handicapped somewhat by the distance between Myself and the U.S. this Forum and the once a year visit to Dallas is just about My only way of keeping up with the players(Old and new)
It is obvious that there are a great many astounding players out there who never seem to get a mention.
Please let us all know about these guys and where they can be found.
We will be a Dallas again next Year and will be visiting Austin and San Antone and need some advice on where to go and who to see.

Billy I'm not sure but I think all the steel players in Texas are great. I'm not going to throw out any names but my favorite new CD's are from Texas singers and pickers. They're playing traditional country using modern recording techniques and the overall sound is perfect.
I wanted to move to Texas but after they heard me play, I was told to stay in N.J. Just kidding. (I hope)

The next topic could be"Who is the best steel player in Texas?...and then the best in the Dallas,San Antonio or Austin area.
Every year we go to Austin and sometimes you have to choose a night who you want to see this time,Cindy Cashdollar,Neil Flanz,Jim Loessberg,Herb Steiner,Geoff Queen,Marty Muse,Danny Hawk,Tommy Detamore,Ricky Davis,Scott Wals.....it's so hard to make a choice.....

A point I am trying to make is that there are numerous players(not necessarily in Texas)who get very mention on the Forum.
How do I (We) get to know of these players?
Olaf,
You have named some great players,if I may use Your list as an example,I have not seen any mention of Geoff Queen,Danny Hawk osr Scott Wals..before.
Ben,
Thanks for replying, but if You are not going to post the names of these players I will never know them Smile
I urge any Forumites to give mention to the lesser known and probably greatly talented players out there.
I am sure they and cerltenly I will appreciate it.
Best regards
Billy

Scott walls plays with the Cornell Hurd band, geoff Queen is with Sunny Sweeney,Danny Hawk plays with Brennen Leigh.
I was just kidding 'cause there are so much good steel players in Texas.
I mentioned a few I have seen in the Austin area,not to mention,Randy Reinhard,Dicky Overby,Bobby Flores.
I always visit my friend Neil Flanz and he takes me to a lot of places, being with Neil means in the break or after the show the steelplayers will be sitting on your table...where you can even touch them...

A couple of years ago I was in Austin and heard Justin Trevino with Craig Schmidt on steel; the rest of the band was bass and drums. Big job to do, and he did it well. Also Don Pawlak with Dale Watson; he does exactly what the gig requires.

I guess I was the one that brought it up, but I still stand behind it,

Rick Price is the most underated player.

If you are ever around and get the chance to go see Jake Hooker, do it. When people talk about Texas Honky tonk music this is it. No guitars (acoustic or electric), small drum kit, a fiddle, upright bass, and Rick all over the mix. This is my definition of the way music is supposed to sound.

Billy - if Steve Palousek is playing in Texas when you go there you have try to get to see him. He is absolutely awesome.

Austin is loaded with good steel players, Houston has a nice lot but I will put this dallas area trio against anybody: Steve Polusek, Junior Knight, and Gary Carpenter.

Denny Mathis and Carson Wells in the hill country; Bobby Tuttle, Bob Kelly, Bobby Rountree, Rich Dell out here in west Texas; Deering, Bobby McCoy, Jeff Agnew, in the Fort Worth/Dallas area; Bobby Bowman, and the two Jodys, Chambers and Sanders down on the coast. I'm sure I didn't leave out over a hundred or so, but it's early in the morning here. Laughing Laughing

Definately Bob Kelly goes on the list, first steel guitar I ever saw. Spent my childhood sitting behind the stage watching him.

Bob Kelly is the reason I started playing.

While searching for something else, I stumbled upon this archived link from 2000 about 'top ten unknown steelers'. Might be an interesting point of comparison versus who gets named now.

I had it in Holland but lost it while moving my stuff over here.Sorry to drift on the topic a little.Didn't mean to hijack it..

One of the most under rated players [in my opinion] is FRANK ARNETT,his old lp MODEL T is a showcase of his great talent.DYKBC.

someone said he didn't have much personality..kinda like an idiot savant..but i hope they're wrong. he's the biggest monster i've gotten intimidated by in a long time!

Chris, I don't think Steve P.'s name belongs in this "underrated" thread. FWIW, I've chatted with Steve on a couple occasions, I didn't detect any lack of personality. Maybe the person who was critiquing Steve's persona, may have been suffering from hungchow? Maybe Steve didn't like him from the gitgo? Who knows, who cares....

Billy Phelps, Bobby Bowman, and Jody Cameron, all live in the Houston, Texas area, and they can hang with anybody. Billy is president of the SOUTHEAST TEXAS STEEL GUITAR club, and all 3 of these guys can be heard playing at their club meetings on Sundays in Katy, Texas at times, and all three usually play at the "Dallas Steel Guitar Convention" every March.

Hi all,

I have been off the forum since about 2003, when I had to sell my Mullen D-10.

I am moving back to my native Texas from Alpharetta, GA in the next month or so - after "doing time" in FL, DE, AZ, and GA over the past 10 yrs.

I will likely also be buying another D-10.
D Kerrville is about 45 min. west of San Antonio, just south of Fredericksburg, just north of Comfort and Bandera. All those towns have very active venues... which I am looking forward to checking out. Being only a short 1 hr ++ drive to Austin, I could also check these guys out...

I had Neil's contact info for a long time, but I have misplaced it.

Anyone who has current contact info for him can email me: bill at billfulbright dot com

Thanks,

Bill

David Wright's playing really knocked me out at the Dallas 2008 show.
