For those of you who have not had the opportunity of reading Richard Smith's great
book on Fender history, now is your chance.
Richard and I spoke last night and he informed me that a new release of his book will be available in paper back at the end of
May (this month). Hal Leonard Publications.
Look for it at your favorite book store.
I have read many books on Fender, but this one is the "BEST". This is the "final word"
by someone who has researched and had the opportunity to put all the information right
from the source,Leo Fender,Donald D.Randall and a few other people .
Check it out. You will love it.

Speak to me again Jody.
The only book I have on Fender is "Fender, The Inside Story" by Forrest White. Is Richard Smith's book subtantually better than this one? And what is the full title of R. Smith's book?

Rick
Forrest White's book was OK..there were overtones of personal conflict with partners at Music Man Im sorry to say. Forrest and myself were good friends and have been throughout the years at Fender. I failed to comply with his wishes of what he referred to as "telling it as it is" and he was upset with the manner Music Man was being directed. His only way of satisfaction was to omit me from his book for my refusing to quote things that were uncalled for and to quote me in his upcoming book he was writing.. However at the end he called and apologized for his actions. I did what I felt was right,I didnt want to bite the hand that was feeding me. I didnt see any
point in bringing personal feelings into something such as he wrote. Forrest was admired by many musicians as he treated them
fair and square. He did me as well. I didnt want to be a part of a situation that I had
no control over.
The dispute lead to Leo Fender's decision to
start the G&L Company. I had never had the good fortune of having better friends than Leo Fender,Forrest White and Tom Walker.
God Bless the man,I miss him.
He passed away a few days later, but not before he cleared the air.. I hold no grudge against Forrest and have the utmost respect for him. He just acted prematurely.
Richards book is titled "Fender The Sound Heard Round The World" and is the best ever written about Fender,,check it out. I know you will love it...To date It's the BEST and I'm positive there will be no equal to this
masterpiece.
You asked me a question and I answered it honestly. I dont pull any punches. Many times in this lifetime people say things they are sorry for later. I didnt want to be one of those kind of people.
Thanks Rick.
edited for spelling..Music Man was a great company with potential,I'm sorry that it went
as it did. Sorry.[This message was edited by Jody Carver on 14 May 2003 at 07:02 PM.] |

Let me add my kudos. This is hands down the best book available on Fender. Pehaps surprisingly, a significant amount of space is devoted to Fender's non-pedal steels with great photos of instruments and marketing literature -including Jody Carver . It shows up on Alibris.com used in hardcover from time to time. If you see it - grab it. Forrest White's book is interesting but doesn't compare to Smith's in scope and objectivity. |

I am waiting for a new book that is on the
Horizon. And that was created by my friend and colleague "ANDY VOLK".
If it is anything of what I know it will be,I would say, Andy has a "WINNER".
I want an autographed copy as well.
One good turn deserves another..Andy deserves
the recognition and sucess that await him.
Its worth the wait. Coming soon.
Be well my friend and Good Luck.

I have a copy of "Fender,The Inside Story", and it is incomplete because it omits an Icon of the Fender Electric Instrument Company, JODY CARVER.
I am anticipating having a copy of "Fender, The Sound Heard Around the World". I hope that Jody receives the recognition in this book that he deserves.
