As a newcomer to the PSG and a flatpicking guitar player of 40 years; one of the most difficult challenges I have faced is using the fingerpicks. Upon closer examination of one of my books today I have discovered that for the past two months I have had the fingerpicks on my index and middle finger on backwards!
I guess this should make it a bit easier. No wonder they kept getting hung up in the strings!! |

Jerry you are not the only one that's done that,A little advice, wearing them backwards can come in handy in a barroom brawl,You can do as much damage with them as an Alabama Bob cat.DYKBC. _________________ Hard headed, opinionated old geezer. Don't feel bad, Jerry. You're one of literally thousands who've made that same mistake.
I always urge anyone taking up any instrument to first go and watch someone play one! Don't buy a book, don't buy a tape, don't buy a CD course, and especially don't buy an instrument...until you've actually watched someone play one!
And no, seeing it on TV or a computer screen doesn't count. |

As always, good advise from Donny, also to add to that, talk to a player that knows more than "a little something" about the instrument. _________________ Bill Ford S12 CLR, S12 Lamar keyless, Misc amps&toys Sharp Covers

That's a common mistake that beginners make. They see classical guitarists growing their fingernails long and assume that the picks are extended fingernails. Ask any non-musician to put fingerpicks on and I guarantee that 9 out of 10 will put them on backwards. |

Jerry,
I did the same thing some 50 years ago when I started playing steel. I too couldn't figure out why they kept hanging up in the strings! _________________ Les Green

Wow, mine always sound good that way!
Splendid! we have another joker in the house.
Dont feel bad though jerry, [if you are serious]
I handed a freind of mine a screwdriver one time, and he was using the handle , on the screwhead.
He looked at me in this very inoccent and naive tone, and said; How does this work?!
Unfortunatly He wasent joking!
Welcome aboard the funny house my freind!

Don't get discouraged, Jerry. One of the best steelers I've ever known (Billy Easton) tells the same story in the liner notes of his CD "Feelin' Groovy" thanking his first teacher for not laughing at him for showing up for his first lesson with his picks on backwards. By the way, Speedy West wrote the prologue for that album. You're in VERY good company. Keep practicing, that'll make a good story someday. Jerry Dragon, welcome aboard.
I don't know if your being sarcastic, funny or honest but any way your going to fit right in.
Some will have, others have had, and some still have, and some always will have, for some it won't make a difference and some will just sound like they have the picks on up-side-down.
No matter, no one here is going to tell you your wrong. Yeh! Right! |

The first time I tried to learn PSG in 1979, I did the same thing. Heck I'm a bass player what did I know! This time around (2007) I knew better. _________________ Carter S-12U, Sho-Bud LGD (80's), Fender Jazz King, Korg Pandora Toneworks PX4D, Modulus Q6, Ampeg B5R, Lapstick Travel Guitar mod to lapsteel |

I'm serious. I think I remember trying them on guitar some thirty or so odd years ago and someone telling me to turn them around. I had forgotten all about that till this incident.
It sure has made it easier, I used them today, I'll get it. |

Jerry, I saw Sonny Curtis (9 years w/ George Jones)
last Sunday and he told the story of how when he first started; he was setting up his own guitar and not knowing any better- he set up his pedals so that when he depressed them the corresponding strings would lower. He said he figured if you lower the pedals the strings should lower. Someone told him he was doing it all wrong! He still has that set up today. I saw it. It's a little different to watch. Don't feel bad. You could be the next Sonny Curtis. Greg _________________ Derby SD-10 4&5 Black!(duh)/

I not only use my picks the right way, but also my bar. That rounded "bullet" end feels nice and smooth against my palm. _________________ Pioneers of Western Swing HOF, Seattle 2005
