From the front row of this show after 10 hours of my butt parked dead in front of the pickers; I've appointed myself to document this event. So go get a cup of coffee; this could get lengthy.
First of all we must acknowledge the efforts of Chubby Howard. This man has devoted his life to this instrument and this kind of music. The list of national recording artists that Chubby has played for is just too long to list. Today he is a driving force in keeping the steel guitar and country music alive in this part of the country and across the nation with his radio show http://myclassiccountry.com/ 12-5 Sat & Sun. Country music and steel guitar!
Ok. The show! Chubby opens and gets us all awake and moving in classic Chubby style. A little e9 mixed w/ some c-6 and some coffee and it's off to the races.
Nashville picker Rusty Rhodes is on next and spends two seconds on figuring out Chubby's set up and he started playing that guitar as if it were his own. It ain't your standard set up. I've played it!
It didn't slow Rusty down a bit. He was on !!!
Then came our wake up call. Miss Emily. Fifteen years young, blind, and made everybody sit up and take notice. She picked that dobro, jumped up and down, and had enough fun for all of us in that building. She was great and so was her spirit!! (we should all be that happy.)
Sixteen year old Chris Castle had to follow that tough act and he did. Like a seasoned pro he got pretty busy with his Derby and performed like a seasoned pro. Watch out everybody; your gonna be seeing this young man a lot real soon. Great job Chris.
Ken Holycross cranked up his Zum with Joe Clooney on drums (I apologize for not remembering the fine talent on piano's name. I'll edit if someone remind me.) yeah "Cloony" I don't know much about Ken but I know what kind of a player he is; "Fantastic."
Phil Perry from Lebanon jumped on board showed every body that an Ohio boy can pick!!
He played that JCH like nobody's business. And if that weren't enough his last song he started with a very beautiful testimony of his relationship with our one true God. Thanks Phil. I don't feel as bad now about not going to church today. A very nice and humble man. Nice to have met you Phil.
"Mr. Smooth" Wayne Hobbs who also has a long resume playing for everyone from Don Ho to Connie Smith changed it up with some jazz, blues, contemporary, easy listening, and a few country tunes and showed everyone just how versatile this instrument can be. Super nice guy and extreme talent!
Sonny Curtis took control and brought us back to some good old classic country music. He was an authority on that subject as he played for some fellow named "George Jones" for 9 years. Need I say more? I don't think so! Your the man Sonny.
I'm gonna jump ahead to the "Legend" Herby Wallace and the Mullen HWP. Looking good and playing great! He has proven to have beaten his recent setback and stepped up to show us all why he has played the main stage in St. Louis for "32 YEARS!!!" I own property and got married in Sevierville Tn. where Herby resides.
Nothing has rubbed off on me. Glad to have chatted with you Herby. You want to see a resume; check out his website.
"What planet did you come from" I asked of Mike Sigler after his show. This guy is from outer space! NOBODY and I mean NOBODY has got any more talent, skill, and personality than Mike! I sat in the front row seat directly in front of him as I did everyone for ten hours. I'm sure my jaw was on the floor from the time he picked his first note to his last! His blinding speed and flair is what country music is supposed to sound like and is a perfect combination for Mike sitting behind his GFI. His side man Lonnie Cootz was also on the money backing up Mike on his Fender. Nice to see Lonnie again.
Tony Howard; (lucky @#$%^) brought his "A game" and stepped up on the stage and to my good fortune gave due respect to Charlie Walker and sang "Pick me up on your way down" and he and Mike "knocked the bone out of it!" ( that means good!) What a stellar performance! I couldn't see behind me but I believe I was the first to stand and begin this ovation. Incredible!! Another humble, nice, and super picker.
Well; I'm sure you glad I'm done with this lengthy post. Whether 1 reads it or 7000 read it; I felt that it had to be documented. I also had to let it out of my system. I was drunk on steel guitar yesterday. The first step in getting better is admitting that you have a problem. My name is Greg and I'm a "Steelguitaraholic.!" (I have pics of this great line up. If enough have interest, I'll re-post.)
"Steel guitar and country music is alive and well thanks to good people like Chubby Howard."
Great show Chubby, Greg
ps Special mention to Vince DeSalvo and Donnie Elkins for working their butts's off all day! Couldn't have done it without them. _________________ Derby SD-10 4&5 Black!(duh)/

Hey Gregg,
Glad you had a good time. I was not able to get to the show this year as I recently had hip replacement surgery and couldn't make it. I sure would have liked to see my friend Mike Sigler, he is a great picker...really nice man...and awesome singer, too. If you have time I would like to see the pictures of what I missed. Thanks in advance. |

Thanks, Greg, for the fantastic report. I feel as if I were there. Oh, wait a minute, I was there.
I had to leave early to attend to some things at home. I hated to do it, but it was either that or miss the entire show.
I would echo my praise and thanks to Chubby and the entire staff that helps him with the show, and also to the great players who travel far and wide to play for us. _________________ HagFan

Greg, thanks for the report on Chubby's show. Cathy and I got there at 12:00 and missed the first of it. After 30 years of playing steel this was my first show and could not have been more pleased with the caliber of the talent, the friendliness of all invoved and the politeness of this audience. Doing some business with Herby Wallace which included trading a PP Emmons as a down payment on A G2 you know what was also worth the drive from Greenbrier county Wva. There is nothing like the feeling you get knowing you have cunducted business with a man who has your best interest in mind. Thank you Mr Wallace. The back up musicians were great. On a side note I grew up in nearby Dayton, Ohio and after talking to the the drummer realized we had started at the same high school together. His name is Vince DiSalvo and he played every act that I was present for. Had to be going on 10 plus hours! It was great to see you Vince. You did a great job and you look just as good as you did 44 years ago. To close let me say that Chubby is a tireless supporter of this music and I'm honored to have made met him. Don D. |

I got there about a quarter to ten in the morning and stayed until the last dog, eeerrr song, was played around 8 PM by the truly phenomenal Rusty Rhodes . Long time to sit, but worth every minute. I saw lots of friends who I only see at this show, a bunch of other folks I know, plus a couple more I had not seen in years. Of course, it helps that I only live 2 miles from the club. Hope everyone drove safe and got back home OK. Thanks Chubby for a great day again.....

I too want to thank my buddy, Chubby Howard for letting me be a part of his show. I have known Chubby since the late sixties when we worked a show together in Tacoma, WA. I was on the road then with LeRoy VanDyke. I do sincerely appreciate Chubby allowing me to play his show even though my playing is still not 100% yet after my stroke. I thought it was an excellent show and I hope to make it back next year.
