I read somewhere that they have similar tonal qualities to a ZB. Is this true? I'd like to see close up pictures of the undercarraige and changer. I'd like to hear some pros and cons! I live 10 hours away from Kingman Arizona and thinking about driving to the shop to test drive one. I want a new modern D-10 with classic/vintage tone. Something with nice action that holds tune. I want to keep the ZB at home more. It's getting a workout!

Dave, they're great guitars and Chuck Back is a super guy to deal with. I just missed getting a used DR on the forum about a week ago. Do a search on the forum and you'll find lots of pictures and very favorable comments. There's also some video on www.youtube.com showing Chuck playing and setting them up.

You will like the DR I think, Chuck makes a great guitar and pays attention to detail. Take the drive.
Remeber ZB's sound like ZB's and PP's sound like PP's and Fenders sound like Fenders. If you are looking for a modern playing guitar to sound like a ZB you might want to consider reworking the underside of a ZB.
Just a thought.

Thanks Larry. I not expecting it to sound exactly like a ZB. If Kevin Hatton was building D-10 ZB replicas I would be looking at that as well!
I checked out the youtubes of Chuck and the Desert Rose. Thanks for the lead on those. I enjoyed them.
What kind of pickup comes with a Desert Rose?

I have played several DR's and they sound great and play great and look like a million bucks. I love that green one.

The Desert Rose come with a George L eon pick up. Its kinda hard to say for sure about the ZB sound due to the single coil pickup that the ZB uses. I would say my first impression is yes but also a ShoBud sound. When I had my ZB I was using a different amp also. I would call the tone very full and you can get a nice mellow sound if you want it. My 16 year old grand daughter says mine sounds like honey which is a new one on me.
It has A lot of sustain and you can play it to the top end of the neck.
I see where some of the players are putting single coil pickups them which would move it closer to the ZB. I have a Wallace true tone but haven't tryed it.
I will say my ZB and my Desert Rose have the best tone for me out of any I've ever played and owened

Thanks for the input. I have a ZB so it doesn't need to sound like one, but as god as one.. I just want great vintage tone. I never was able to get humbuckers to work for me. I love single coil. 60 cycle hum is rarely a problem.

Hey Dave, You'd be hard pressed to find a better built steel or at a better price. Chuck builds each one, one at a time. He will also put on any pick-up you want, but currently comes standard with the George L eon. Just a month or so ago, we had a thread where owners of the Desert Rose were posting pictures and comments, sorry you missed it. It's worth a phone call my friend. Fred (don't you just love that kitchen chair? I have got to take a new photo showing my beautiful Desert Rose seat behind it...)

Norris that is a beautiful guitar that Chuck built for you. I have 2 of them one is blue and one is the size of yours and it is black. I really love them. I have an E-66 in both of them. I just didnt care for the Eon that much. Now I have the sound that I like on both. Thanks for buying a guitar from Chuck as he is a real Prince of a guy and builder.(Chuck you can send the endorsement check any time....HA HA>

| Dave, last time I was in Arizona for the SWSGA show, Chuck was there with a few demo steels. Sounds to me like a good excuse to catch the next show. They've been held in mid-January, if you can wait that long. There's also usually a couple of DR steels on stage too, so you can get a good idea of the sound in the mix.. |
